July 11, 2011 - North American League (NAmL)
Lake County Fielders News Release
The Lake County Fielders lost the final game of their seven game series against Yuma today, 10-4.
Even with the loss, the Fielders still won the series 4-3 and are now 24-15 on the season.
The Scorpions ¬â¢ hitters started early in today ¬â¢s game, and never looked back. Joey Gathright hit a leadoff double off of today ¬â¢s losing pitcher, Ryan Carr, to begin the game. Gathright then scored on a throwing error via a Jose Canseco groundball to make it a 1-0 Yuma lead. Willy Aybar then doubled, and Arnoldo Ponce tripled to increase the lead to 3-0.
There was a scary moment on the field in the 3rd inning, when a sharp line drive off the bat of Aybar struck Carr in the head. After both teams gathered around the mound to check on Carr, he was able to walk off of the field on his own power. Evan Kholi came into relief for Carr, inheriting runners on first and second with one out, and gave up a three run home run to Jesse Alfonso to make it a 6-0 Yuma lead.
The Fielders did not get onto the board until the 5th inning, after Brad Payne drove in Chris Thompson on a bloop single to make it a 6-1 game. Thompson previously made it on base via an error by the short stop.
Lake County kept chipping away at the score, after Quentin Luquette drove in Zac Cline on a single up the middle to make it a 6-2 game in the 6th. The Fielders then scored two more in the 7th, after Jino Gonzalez doubled home Payne and Alan Rick to cut Yuma ¬â¢s lead to 6-4.
But Yuma responded in the top of the 9th, as Nick Gaudi gave up four more runs on a double from Carlos Leon and a home run by Ponce to make it a 10-4 Scorpion lead.
Chris Britton got the win for the Scorpions, after going 6.1 innings and giving up four runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts.
Top performers from the Fielders included Brandon Newton (3-5 with a double and a triple), Gonzalez (2-5 with two RBIs), Patrick Brooks (2-5) and Payne (2-3 with an RBI, run scored, walk and a stolen base).
With the loss, the Fielders are currently tied for first place with the Edmonton Capitals.
The Fielders have an off day tomorrow, and then begin a seven game series against the Chico Outlaws Tuesday night at 7p.m.
