Capitals beat Outlaws 5-4; take series by same margin

July 11, 2011 - North American League (NAmL)
Chico Outlaws News Release

For just the second time in this nine game series, the Chico Outlaws scored the first run of the game. In the third inning, a lead-off single by Kurt Steinhauer would be put the Outlaws in a position to strike first. Two batters later, slugger Chris Lubanski would move Steinhauer to third and he would later come around to score on an Al Quintana single to give the Outlaws the 1-0 lead. However, the Capitals got that run back just a half inning later. Tom Collaro led off the top of the fourth inning with a shot to deep centerfield that just barely cleared the wall to tie the game at one.

After both teams put up two runs in the fifth inning, the difference in the game would came in the sixth inning. With the game tied at three, Brent Metheny opened the inning with a double and later moved to third on a wild pitch. The next batter, Carlos Duncan, singled him home to give the Capitals a one run advantage. After a sacrifice bunt by pitcher Rory Shortell and a second wild pitch in the inning to move Duncan to third, Matt Rogelstad picked up his 19th RBI of the season on a single to left field; giving the Capitals a much needed insurance run.

The Outlaws would add a run in the seventh, but it wouldn't be enough as a 1-2-3 ninth inning gave the Capitals the win. The Outlaws will now hit the road on the way to Chicago to play the Northern division leaders, the Lake County Fielders, for a seven game series before heading back home on July 19th.
