I Am Iron Man

July 11, 2011 - North American League (NAmL)
San Angelo Colts News Release

The Colts Cory Patton who is both pitching and hitting well, is a baseball throw back bringing back iron man baseball when the game was not so specialized and baseball players did it all. San Angelo Colts OF/LHP became the third member of Colts to win the North American League Rawlings Player-of-the-Week Award this season. Cory collected 16 hits in 31 at bats last week for a .516 batting average, had 2 doubles, and 4 homeruns, and both drove in and scored 12 runs. Patton, who also is the Colts lone lefty out of the bullpen, threw two innings this past week in a game, not allowing and earned run and struck out two.

On the mound, he has a 4.22 ERA and 12 strikeouts in 10.2 innings overall. At the plate, Patton leads the league with an amazing .470 batting average, as well as on base percentage (.525) and slugging (.910). He is also third in the league in homeruns (12) and fifth in RBIs (39). The most impressive part is that he has played in only 25 games while most of the North American League leaders have played in 40 plus games.

Patton was drafted twice; the first time in 2003 by the Padres in the 6th round, but decided to go back for his senior year at Texas A & M and became a Big 12 Conference All-Star Outfielder, where he hit .326 with 11 homeruns and 67 RBIs. He was then drafted in the 6th round again in 2004, this time by the Toronto Blue Jays; where in 2008 he was a Florida State League All-Star Outfielder, hitting .305 with 13 homeruns and 70 RBIs. Patton is now focusing on pitching, after making his professional debut on the mound last year in the Northern League. So far, Cory Patton is showing the North American League that he is a dual threat helping the Colts both tried to win the South Division on the mound and at the plate.
