RF Patton and LHP Stevenson Earn Weekly Honors in North American League
July 11, 2011 - North American League (NAmL) News Release
(San Ramon, CA) The North American League, one of the premier independent professional baseball leagues on the continent, announced today that San Angelo Colts right fielder Cory Patton and Chico Outlaws left-handed pitcher Jason Stevenson have been named the Rawlings Players of the Week for the week of July 3rd.
San Angelo Colts right fielder Cory Patton collected 16 hits in 31 at bats last week for a .516 batting average. His hits included 2 doubles and 4 homeruns. Patton also drove in 12 runs last week, striking out just 4 times and drawing 5 walks. Patton is proving that pitchers can hit too, as the left-hander also pitches for the Colts. On the mound, he has a 4.22 ERA and 12 strikeouts in 10.2 innings. Patton pitched 2 innings last week without surrendering an earned run. At the plate, Patton leads the league in batting average (.470), on-base percentage (.525), and slugging percentage (.910). He has 12 homeruns (3rd - NAL) and 39 RBI (tied for 5th - NAL) despite having played just 25 games. Patton was originally drafted in the 6th round of the 2003 MLB Amateur Player Draft by the San Diego Padres out of Texas A&M. In 2004, he returned to Texas A&M and was once again drafted in the 6th round, this time by the Toronto Blue Jays. An outfielder during his time in Toronto's organization, Patton is now also focusing on pitching after making his professional debut on the mound last year in the Northern League. So far, Cory Patton is showing the North American League that he can help the Colts on the mound and at the plate.
Chico Outlaws left-hander Jason Stevenson made 2 starts last week, finishing with a 2-0 record and a 2.38 ERA. Stevenson also recorded 15 strikeouts in 15 and 1/3 innings pitched. A former 12th round pick of the Montreal Expos in 2000, the 29 year old lefty climbed through Montreal's (now the Washington Nationals) system quickly, reaching AAA in 2004. In 2011, Stevenson has made 4 starts for the Outlaws, picking up the win in all 4. He has not failed to pitch into the 8th inning in any of his starts. Stevenson has a sparkling 1.48 ERA to go along with 29 strikeouts and just 7 walks in 30 and 1/3 innings pitched. The ace of the Chico Outlaws staff, Jason Stevenson is quickly closing in on league leaders in wins and will lead the league in ERA once he reaches the innings pitched threshold, should he keep turning in brilliant pitching performances.
