Fielders Blanked in Thursday Double Header
August 5, 2011 - North American League (NAmL)
Lake County Fielders News Release
Zion, IL -The starters for Thursday's matinee tilt between the Lake County Fielders and Calgary Vipers each had ERA's well over six; but you wouldn't have known that from the performance by each pitcher during Calgary's 4-0 win early Thursday afternoon in game one of a double-header.
Calgary starter Edward Valdez entered the game with a team worst 6.86 ERA. Valdez proved the doubters wrong going six strong innings while allowing three hits and striking out six in the shortened seven-inning game.
The Fielders sent right-hander Trenton Lee to the mound who entered Thursday's action with an ERA over eight. Lee went five innings, allowing two runs on five hits while walking three and striking out two.
Leading the offensive charge for the Vipers were their one and two hitters; Jeff Kaplan and Wilver Perez. Each went two for three with a run scored and an RBI each. Mark Samuelson led the Fielders in game one, going two for three at the dish and raising his average to .304 on the season.
Game two was much of the same story as both starters shut their opposing offenses down. The only run through the first 4 innings was scored by the Vipers in the second inning after a controversial call by the umpire that allowed base runner Louie Templeton to remain on base after seemingly being picked off at first by Jesus Gomez. Templeton then scored on a double by Justin Tellam.
Unfortunately, the Fielders bats remained dormant throughout the game as the Viper's heated up enough to add two more runs, one in the fifth and one in the sixth, to seal the victory and the double header sweep.
Game 4 of this 9 game set is scheduled for Friday evening at 7 pm live from Fielders Stadium in Zion, Illinois. All games can be heard on 1220 AM WKRS, wkrs1220.com, or at fieldersbaseball.com with Derek Diesner on the call. Don't forget fans that great seats still remain for the rest of this series against Calgary, so get them while you can.
