Comeback Falls Short For Thunder

EDINBURG, Texas---The McAllen Thunder got within one run of the lead but fell 5-2 to the San Angelo Colts Friday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

The Colts (42-25) got on the scoreboard with a solo home run by Ronnie Gaines which made it 1-0.

The score remained the same until the top of the fifth when Beau Riportella hit a two-run home run off of Thunder starter Frank James (4-2) which made it 3-0 San Angelo.

The Thunder (28-40) got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run by Brian Nichols cutting the Colts lead 3-1.

In the bottom of the eighth, Antoin Gray hit a one-out double and then moved to third on a fielding error that put runners on the corners. Nichols then followed with a two-out RBI single that allowed Gray to score cutting the San Angelo lead to 3-2.

The Colts answered in the top of the ninth. With two outs, Landon Camp was hit by a pitch and that knocked James out of the game. Clay Calfee then followed with a single off of reliever Justin Jordan. The next batter, Vic Ferrante, hit a two-run double that allowed Camp and Calfee to score making it 5-2.

Sean Kramer then struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth for his 10th save of the season giving San Angelo the 5-2 victory.

Chase Vacek (1-2) pitched three and two-thirds innings of relief for his first win of the season after allow two runs and striking out one.

The Thunder and Colts will play the final game of their series Saturday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
