Chico Outlaws News Release

REDDING - The Yuma Scorpions' pitching was the story on Thursday night at Tiger Field, as they held the Chico Outlaws to one run in 14 innings en route to a double- header sweep.

Yuma got to Chico starter Dave Whigham right away in game one. In the first inning with one out, the Scorpions loaded the bases, as Tony Phillips doubled, Jose Canseco walked, and Gerardo Avila singled. Phillips and Canseco would both later score on an RBI single by Jared McDonald and a sac-fly from Jonathan Jaspe.

Chico scored their only run of the night in the second on a long homerun by Jake Rife to the opposite field in left. Yuma tacked on four more runs and coasted to a 6-1 win. Arnaldo Ponce came through with a two-run single, J.J. Muse hit a solo homer, and Avila delivered another RBI single. Avila went 3-3 in the ballgame.

Whigham (0-3) took the loss for the Outlaws, lasting four innings and surrendering nine hits and six runs (five earned). Jason Roenicke pitched two shutout innings of relief, striking out four. Andrew Romo (4-5) was outstanding for Yuma. The righty pitched a complete game, and allowed just five hits and one run, with no walks and nine strikeouts.

Game two followed a similar script, as Chico managed just four hits in a 3-0 Yuma shutout. The Scorpions had to use four pitchers, however, due to an exciting moment for their starting pitcher Robby Scott. After striking out the side in the first inning in impressive fashion, the lefty Scott was pulled off the mound after taking his warm-up pitches in the second because his contract had just been purchased by the Boston Red Sox.

The loss of Scott did not faze the Scorpions, however. Brenden Smith, James Hoyt, and Chris Thompson combined to finish the shutout. The Yuma pitchers struck out 13 Outlaws in the ballgame. Hoyt (2-0) picked up the win, striking out five in three innings. Thompson tallied his sixteenth save of the season with a hitless seventh, striking out two.

The offensive attack for Yuma began in the second, as J.J. Muse doubled home Jonathan Jaspe. A Jose Canseco RBI single in the third made it 2-0. The Scorpions added an insurance run in the sixth, as Jaspe launched a leadoff solo homer to right.

Chico starter Kyle Wilson (2-1) pitched well, but took the hard luck loss. The righty tossed a six-inning complete game, scattering eight hits and three runs, with two walks and two strikeouts.
