Wichita Thunder News Release

INDEPENDENCE, MO- The Wichita Thunder lost 2-1 to the Missouri Mavericks at the Independence Events Center on Friday night.

The Thunder outshot the opposition for a third time in as many games this season, but went 0 for 8 on the power play in the one-goal loss.

Despite a number of quality scoring chances created by the Thunder offense, Missouri scored the first goal of the night at 14:44 in the first period. Oilivier Fillion delivered a shorthanded goal to the left of Marty Magers on an odd-man rush created by Toby Lafrance. Magers made his Thunder debut on Saturday.

Shortly after the goal, the teams hooked up in a pair of fights. Heavyweights Jason Goulet and Carlyle Lewis dropped the gloves at 15:52, while Ryan Hand and Derek Knowles squared off after the next faceoff. Using momentum from the scrums, Wichita tied the game at 17:32 when rookie defenseman Steven Kaunisto scored on a snap shot from the inner edge of the right faceoff circle.

The Mavericks regained the lead with just over 33 seconds left in the second period. Just as the first penalty on a Missouri five-on-three power play had expired, Mike Berry tapped in a loose puck on Magers' backdoor to make it 2-1. The goal followed a number of successful clears by the Thunder while they were at a two-man disadvantage.

Wichita created more quality chances in the third, but Mavericks' goaltender Gerry Festa saved 11 of 11 to hang on for the win. The Thunder had an extra attacker on the ice for the final 1:20.

Wichita outshot Missouri 36 to 26 for the game. Festa saved 35 of 36 in the win. Magers was strong as well, saving 24 of 26 and not allowing an even strength goal. The Mavericks are now 11-0-0 all-time against the Thunder. Missouri was 1 for 6 in power play chances.

The Thunder hosts the Allen Americans Saturday night at the INTRUST Bank Arena at 7:05 p.m. For tickets, call the arena box office at (316) 755-SEAT or visit the Thunder's official website at www.wichitathunder.com.
