Dayton Gems News Release

Dayton, OH- The Dayton Gems picked up their second win of the season tonight with a 3-2 victory over the visiting Quad City Mallards, the first of 10 meetings between the two teams this season.

The Gems were looking to bounce back after a tough 7-5 loss at Hara Arena on Sunday against the defending league Champion Rapid City Rush. Early in the first period, the Mallards jumped out to a 1-0 lead and out shot Dayton along the way throughout the period 15-9. Late in the first, Corey Couturier tied the game with a twisted wrister underneath the stick side of Mallards starting goaltender David Brown. Thanks to the game-tying goal and sound play in net by Gems starter Jeff Jakaitis, the game was tied after the first 20 minutes of play.

In the second period, it was the Mallards again that got the early goal with a power play tally by Mallards defenseman Tyler Kindle within the first four minutes of the second period to give Quad City a 2-1 edge. Gems rookie defenseman Paul Ferraro would notch his first professional goal moments later to tie the game again on a bomb from the point that found its way right past Brown and into the back of the net. That was all the scoring for both sides in the second, which set up an exciting finish heading to the third and final period of play.

After relentless pressure on the puck and chance after chance when the Gems controlled the play early in the third, the tie was broken when returning Gems defenseman Matt Szypura sent a shot from the top of the slot and with a screen set up in front, got it right past Brown to give Dayton a 3-2 lead. Quad City would not go quietly and two huge penalty kills by the Gems (which included a six-on-four to finish the game after Quad City pulled Brown and was awarded a power play) would end up making the difference in a hard fought but well earned one goal victory.
