Evansville Shorts Out RiverKings

SOUTHAVEN, MS - Mario Larocque's third period unassisted goal turned out to be the game-winner, then Evansville finished off the night with two unassisted goals for a 5-2 final score over the Mississippi RiverKings on Friday, October 22nd at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven.

With the loss, the RiverKings fell to 0-3-0 for the season, and Evansville (1-1-0) won its first contest in the Central Hockey League in its second try.

Mississippi started off quickly in the first moments of the contest, as Matt Summers took a feed from Matt Boyd and beat Evansville goaltender David Wilson with just 1:06 gone in the contest for a 1-0 RiverKings lead.

Evansville answered at 6:55 when Brian Bicek scored his second of the season for a 1-1 tie in the first period. But, Anthony Battaglia answered that with his first goal of the year nearly five minutes later at 11:51, a power play goal assisted by Derek Landmesser and Nathan Lutz for a 2-1 lead after one period of play.

Niklas Lindberg knotted up the contest for Evansville nearly six minutes into the second period for a 2-2 score after two periods.

In the third period, Larocque stole a clearing pass in his offensive zone and beat Mississippi goaltender Larry Sterling at 8:44 for a 3-2 lead and what would turn out to be the game winning goal for the IceMen.

Evansville added shorthanded goals in the final two minutes by John DiPace and Nick Schneider scored another shortie into an empty net as time expired.

Mississippi out shot the IceMen by a 38-32 margin. Sterling (0-2-0) stopped 27 shots in net for the RiverKings, while his Evansville counterpart, David Wilson was 36-for-38 in the IceMen crease.

The RiverKings were 1-for-7 on the power play, while Evansville was 2-for-6 on the man advantage and scored two shorthanded goals.

Mississippi hosts Missouri tomorrow night in a 7:05 PM contest at the DeSoto Civic Center. Evansville opens its home season against Quad City at the same time in Evansville.
