CINCINNATI - FC Cincinnati 2 drop points in a 3-2 loss to Philadelphia Union II Sunday night at Mercy Health Training Center. FCC 2 remains 10th in the Eastern Conference while Philadelphia moves into the 6th spot, as results stand.
Jesús Bueno opened the scoring in the 24th minute following a failed clearance of a Jack McGlynn corner. The service made its way through an initial attempt to clear before finding Bueno with space near the edge of the box. Bueno collected calmly before slipping a shot into the right bottom corner of the net.
Chris Donovan scored his first goal since April 24th for Union II to double the visitor's lead. A turnover from FCC 2 in the defensive third led to the chance and Donovan's low-driven shot beat Nico Campuzano at the far post. Donovan's fourth goal of the season ties him for a team lead.
FCC 2 pulled one back three minutes later through Arquimides Ordóñez, his third goal for the 2's. Morgan Marshall assisted on the goal, picking out Ordóñez in the box following an attacking run down the right sideline. It's Marshall's second assist of the season.
Bueno scored his second goal of the evening in the 57th minute to cap off an impressive night for the defensive midfielder. Bueno assisted on Donovan's early second-half goal as well and finished with four shots and four challenges won.
Kai Thomas scored his first goal for the club in the 85th minute with a headed effort from six yards out, clipping the underside of the crossbar and giving life to an FCC 2 comeback. A number of late chances went by the wayside as FCC 2 couldn't find a stoppage-time equalizer.
"Disappointed with the result. But I think we did some things very well tonight. As the game went on we had some good movement and good stretches of controlling the tempo," said Tyrone Marshall, head coach of FCC 2. "We had some opportunities but came up just short. You have to compete. If you want to be young pros you have to be able to battle in these types of games."
FC Cincinnati 2 set their sights toward next week when the 2's host Columbus Crew 2 at TQL Stadium on Sunday night. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. ET.
