Real Salt Lake Suffer 4-1 Defeat

Real Salt Lake News Release

Amidst the roar of the sold out crowd RSL struggled to impose its dominance on Supporter's Shield leaders. LAFC nearly to have the opening goal in the eighth minute when José Cifuentes headed down a shot, but an initial save from Zac MacMath and goal-line clearance from Justen Glad saw the chance snuffed. However, just moments later Cristian Arango willed the ball over the line to take the 1-0 lead. Real Salt Lake made quick work to find the response when, in the 12th minute, Sergio Cordova received the ball at the top of the box from Andrew Brody, spinning around his defender he skipped the ball into the bottom-left corner to bring the score level.

In the 17th minute LAFC, once again, took the lead when a short clearance left a free ball inside the box for Acosta to rip into the near post, giving the visiting side the 2-1 advantage. Arango nearly netted two more before the end of the half, but heroics from MacMath kept the Claret-and-Cobalt within one heading into the break.

At the start of the second half forward Justin Meram was inches away from finding the equalizer, but a goal-line clearance robbed him of what seemed to be a sure goal. Then, in the 58th minute Pablo Ruiz rocketed a shot towards goal, but his attempt bounced off the crossbar and out for a goal kick.

Arango found his second goal of the night in the 60th minute when he slide through the box, toe poking the ball over the line to take the 3-1 lead. Real Salt Lake continued to press towards goal, looking for a way back into the game, but were unable to secure the second-half comeback. Finally, a late-game goal from forward Gareth Bale sealed the 4-1 victory for LAFC, giving Real Salt Lake just its second loss at home this year.
