FC Dallas News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. (Sunday, June 7) - FC Dallas (6-4-4, 22 points) picked up a point on the road in today's 0-0 draw against the San Jose Earthquakes (5-4-5, 19) at Avaya Stadium.
The visitors controlled possession and had the match's only two chances through the first 15 minutes. The best came in the 10th minute when Mauro Diaz narrowly missed the left post behind San Jose goalkeeper David Bingham with a bending, right-footed free kick.
San Jose's first opportunity came in the 16th minute when Matias Perez Garcia lobbed a ball in from midfield for forward Mark Sherrod. The precise long ball put Sherrod in perfect position to score, but the Knoxville, Tenn., native could not keep his first-touch chance under the bar.
Dallas retaliated in the 20th minute when a through ball to Michael Barrios on the flank put the diminutive midfielder in a one-on-one position. Barrios easily slipped by 6-2 defender Victor Barnardez and got off a shot from inside the area that would have picked out the top right corner of the net, but Bingham came up with a diving, left-handed save to keep the match level.
FC Dallas goalkeeper Dan Kennedy answered in the 33rd minute when Marvell Wynne combined with Garcia to put Chris Wondolowski in alone against the goalkeeper. Kennedy charged off his line to try and catch a piece of the veteran's shot. The goalkeeper came up huge when Wondolowski's attempt caught a piece of the goalkeeper's right leg before rebounding off the forward and going out of bounds for a goal kick.
San Jose nearly took a 1-0 lead into halftime via a corner kick in the 44th minute but Bernardez's header bounced too hard off the turf and cleared the crossbar on the rebound.
FC Dallas gained a one-man advantage in the 53rd minute when an otherwise innocent cross into the box was gobbled up by Kennedy. However, as a late-arriving Sherrod attempted to lift his right foot over the head of Kennedy, the forward's spikes caught the brow of the goalkeeper and referee Baldomero Toledo went to his pocket for the red card.
Despite playing a man up, FC Dallas was unable to create any solid scoring chances against a bunkered-in Earthquakes defense.
Toledo evened the teams back up in the 75th minute when Dallas' Je-Vaughn Watson was issued a straight red card after the Jamaican and Cordell Cato came together following a corner kick.
San Jose went down to nine men in the 87th minute when Toledo tossed J.J. Koval out of the match for a tackle on Ryan Hollingshead.
Dallas threated to score its second late game-winning goal against the Earthquakes this season in the four added minutes of stoppage time but the visitors could not get a clean shot off against Bingham before time expired.
