FC Dallas Falls to the Vancouver Whitecaps, 2-1

Vancouver, BC - FC Dallas was unable to get the draw at BC Place after cutting the deficit in half late in the game with a goal from Dominique Badji.

Game Summary

First Half:

11'- Dominique Badji sent a shot across the box but Jacori Hayes arrives a second too late to slot it in.

26'- Jesus Ferreira connected with Michael Barrios inside the box firing the pass towards the net, but his shot goes high grazing the top of the goal.

30'- Ali Adnan scored the first goal for Vancouver firing a curling shot to the top right corner after going through Reggie Cannon and Michael Barrios at the top of the box.

40'- Lucas Venuto doubled the lead for the Whitecaps after receiving a backheel pass from Fredy Montero.

Second Half:

56'- Michael Barrios sent in a cross from the right flank that beats Crépeau, but Pablo Aranguiz's right-footer hits the crossbar before falling back into the arms of the keeper.

64'- Badji attempted a shot from inside the box following a corner but it goes to the right.

73'- FC Dallas' ninth corner of the night results in a Ryan Hollingshead header from the center of the box that travels just over the crossbar.

75'- Jesse Gonzalez made his second save of the night after Theo Bair fires one straight into Gonzalez at the center of the goal.

84'- Venuto gets a one-on-one with Gonzalez and gets past him, but John Nelson recovers just in time to block his shot from doing further damage to FC Dallas.

85'- Badji cut inside from the right flank and dribbles swiftly past two Vancouver defenders before sending a left-footed strike past Crépeau's near post.

On today's result...

"Disappointing. It was a game that we had a lot of control of in terms of possession, service, shots, but not efficient enough. Shots were not hitting the frame, the service was not finding runners, it's part of the game. Two goals down early, it's difficult especially there were moments where we were imposing, and dominating the ball, and controlling the game. We give up goals in these moments, and now we have to climb into the game rather than initiating with meaning."

On the second-half reponse...

"The boys responded well in the second half. They took risk and pushed. We got a nice goal from Badji. Good effort there. I think had we gotten the 2-1 goal earlier, Pablo's shot hits the post and goes in. We have 30 minutes to score the second, or even the third. The 2-1 came late, then we had to have an onslaught to score the 2-2. Credit to Vancouver for how they defended in their box, getting to our crosses, and get things away from the box. Congratulations to them."

On Dominique Badji...

"Badji's had some injuries that didn't allow him to compete a few weeks ago. He's feeling better and better. He was active today. He played on the wing, he played in the nine. He had to adapt and showed he could get us back into the game. When he's healthy, he's a piece that's important for us to get to create and be dangerous in the box."

On his goal...

"It felt good to score of course. It always feels good to score. It was unfortunate we were down, but it's nice to bring us back a little bit. It gave us a little bit of life, but you know, ultimately it wasn't enough. I wish I could've gotten a second one to help us out but it's just one of those games but I'm definitely happy to have scored."

On what the team needs to work on versus Seattle...

"We have to be aggressive from the start. I think we kind of didn't come out with the energy we wanted this game and they put two goals on us quick and so if we start the way we finished or start the second half, I think we'll definitely be in a good position."

Overall thoughts on today's match...

"I think in the first half we dominated with the ball, but that doesn't mean you're going to win every time. They come down and they get only two chances and they capitalize on them. They had good finishes. But I think for us, we need to put away our chances and be more aggressive in the box. Be more lethal. Same with the second half, you know, they sat back a little and they were up 2-0 and we went for the game. Give credit to the boys, though, we didn't give up. We pushed the game and, you know, that just happens sometimes but we need to be more aggressive in the box and we're going to keep working at it and stay positive."

On Matt Hedges and Reto Ziegler's absence on the field today...

"It definitely changed it a bit. Matt [Hedges]'s a leader on this team. So is Reto [Ziegler], he's our captain, and you know, we lose a little voice back there but I thought we stepped up and we did alright in the backline, especially in the second half, we were giving them nothing, we were winning the balls in the air, keeping the ball for us. I thought guys stepped up."

On Ali Adnan's departure early in the game...

"He had a good goal. I think once he came out, we could attack his side a little more, which I thought we did, especially in the second half."

On bouncing back versus Seattle...

"We have to stay positive you know. We're going through a rough patch. It goes with every team. Every team this season has its difficulties: injuries, people on international break but like I said guys got to step up. We're going to stay positive and this is a group that's going to keep putting the work so no matter what happens we're going to stay a family like we are."

Overall thoughts...

"We knew it was going to be a tough game. It's a field that we're not familiar with, but we know in this league you have to be prepared for any circumstance, for any climate, for any field. Unfortunately, [Vancouver] had two clear chances, two goals, and they found themselves. We didn't have the patience to score more goals. We created a lot of options, but we couldn't score. We hope to work during the week to fix all of that and return to winning ways Saturday at home."

On returning to the pitch after injury and game suspension...

"Apart from the result, personally, I'm happy for that. Because I didn't have any problems playing all 90 minutes after the hard hit I took against LA. We knew that we would be tested today, practically, with the crowd, with hearts going full speed, but thanks to God, in the end, I am fine and we all hope to keep working, keep improving what we need to improve to get a win and we hope it's against Seattle on Saturday."

On Dominique Badji's goal...

"It was a goal that we were looking for since the first half. We created a lot of chances like I said. In the second half, we also created a lot. But, late in the game we finally opened our scoring with Dominique [Badji]'s goal. Despite that we had time, we had options, we controlled the match, we always had the ball by [Vancouver's] goal, we just didn't have the patience or the calmness in the last fourth of the pitch to finish off the play. So, we hope to improve on that for what's to come."
