Father-Son Goaltending Duo Take the Ice for the Ontario Reign; San Jose Prevails in Overtime

Ontario, CA - Netminders Jonah Imoo and Dusty Imoo became the first father-son goaltending duo in AHL history as the Ontario Reign (2-1-1-0) suffered a suspenseful 5-4 overtime loss to the San Jose Barracuda (1-1-0-0) on Saturday night in front of a crowd of 8,282 at Citizens Business Bank Arena. Jonah made his AHL debut after goaltender Jack Campbell was recalled from the Los Angeles Kings early this morning and provided 26 saves in the overtime loss.
"I've been waiting for this opportunity for a while," commented Jonah after the game. "I've worked really hard, and I've had fun but it was a really intense game going into OT so I wouldn't have it going any other way."
Back and forth and up and down the Reign and Barracuda went for 60 minutes before forward Daniel O'Regan put the finishing touch in overtime, scoring on a breakaway to win it for San Jose.
"I just wish it would've had a better ending for Jonah," said Head Coach Mike Stothers after the game. "That's a real tough situation to come in on and you know it's tough on him. It's tough on his dad. He's got a job to do as goalie coach and he can't be partial and yet, he's trying to root for his son."
Ontario opened the first period scoring first when forward Patrick Bjorkstrand capitalized on the power play, burying his first AHL goal of the season at 10:25. Defenseman Zach Trotman and forward Andrew Crescenzi recorded the assists. The Barracuda quickly responded, scoring on the power play thanks to forward Marcus Sorensen to even the score at 14:58.
In the middle frame, forward Kevin Labanc put San Jose ahead at 2:41, before Ontario netted the equalizer minutes later with Bjorkstrand scoring again after the Barracuda drew a penalty for too many men on the ice. At 8:52 of the same period, defenseman Joakim Ryan tucked the puck past Imoo to regain the Barracuda lead. The back and forth continued until forward Brett Sutter fired one in with help from Bjorkstrand and defenseman Alex Lintuniemi at 12:59. 59 seconds later, San Jose scored another to make it, 4-3.
At 2:44 of the final period, Crescenzi evened the score yet again unassisted for his first goal of the season. San Jose scored the eventual game winner in overtime.
San Jose netminder Mantas Armalis registered 11 stops on 15 attempts.
"We didn't generate a lot for him [Imoo] so we need to be a little bit better in front of him I think, said Stothers. "We had four goals on 11 shots. I don't know if that means anything more than that we're accurate, but if we're that bloody accurate, we should shoot more."
The Ontario Reign open a five-game road trip on Friday, October 28 against the Texas Stars at 5:30 p.m. PT at H-E-B Center at Cedar Park in Cedar Park, Texas. The journey goes through Cedar Park (October 28-29), San Antonio (October 30) and Tucson, Arizona (November 4-5) before returning home to Citizens Business Bank Arena on Wednesday, November 9 to host the San Antonio Rampage at 7:00 p.m. PT.
