ROCKFORD, IL - The AHL's defending Calder Cup Champions, the Cleveland Monsters, proudly powered by Constellation, were defeated by the Rockford IceHogs at the BMO Harris Bank Center in Rockford, IL on Sunday by a final score of 5-2. With the loss, the Monsters fell to 2-2 on the season and with a .500 points percentage, currently sit alone in fourth place in the AHL's Central Division standings.
The IceHogs stormed out of the gate on Sunday, seizing a 1-0 lead at 9:00 of the opening period, courtesy of a power-play marker from Kyle Baun. Ten minutes later, Rockford pushed their lead to 2-0 when Martin Lundberg potted his second goal of the season, an even-strength tally at 19:00 of the first frame.
After the 'Hogs extended their advantage to 3-0 thanks to a Spencer Abbott power-play goal at 4:03 of the second, the Monsters hung tough and were rewarded with an even-strength Aaron Palushaj tip-in goal at 17:37 of the middle frame on feeds from Dean Kukan and Justin Scott. Then, in the period's final minute, Daniel Zaar drew Cleveland within a goal at 3-2 with his first marker of the campaign, a five-on-five goal set up by Cody Goloubef and Nick Moutrey at 19:12.
The IceHogs pulled away in the third with an even-strength Brandon Mashinter score at 6:53 and sealed a 5-2 victory with an unassisted Carl Dahlstrom goal at 19:30. In his first appearance of the season, Cleveland net-minder Brad Thiessen stopped 30 of the 34 pucks he faced in defeat, while Mac Carruth earned the win in net for Rockford by virtue of a 27-save performance. The IceHogs' victory was the team's first in their past eight head-to-head meetings vs. the Monsters, dating back to the 2015-16 regular season.
Next up for the Monsters, it's a Tuesday road clash vs. Cleveland's Central Division rivals, the Iowa Wild, with full coverage, live from Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, IA, underway at 8:00 pm on 99X and the Monsters Hockey Network.
