Stockton Ports News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Ports turned the tables on the Visalia Rawhide Sunday night at Banner Island Ballpark. A day after the Ports saw Visalia score four runs in its half of the first inning, the Ports scored four runs in the bottom of the first on their way to an 8-3 victory that puts them back in a tie for first place with Visalia in the North Division standings. With the win, the Ports also avoid a sweep and salvage the final game of their three-game set with the Rawhide.
The Ports had six hits as part of a four-run bottom of the first, including four doubles. Luke Persico doubled with one out and scored on an ensuing single by Brett Siddall that gave Stockton a 1-0 lead. Viosergy Rosa and Edwin Diaz followed with back-to-back RBI doubles to make it 3-0 and Greg Deichmann added an RBI single that stretched the Stockton lead to 4-0.
Rawhide starter Jeff Bain (3-2) pitched a clean second but would be victimized by a pair of two-run homers in the third and the fourth. In the third, Deichmann homered to right-center to make it 6-0. For Deichmann, it marked his third home run of the week. Rosa added a two-run blast in the fourth to make it 8-1.
Bain would suffer the loss, going four innings and allowing a career-high eight runs on nine hits while striking out five.
Ports starter Kyle Friedrichs (2-2) set down nine of the first 10 batters he faced, including eight-in-a-row to open his outing. Friedrichs' only misstep came in the top of the fourth when he surrendered a solo homer to Drew Ellis. Friedrichs pitched around a bases-loaded jam with two outs in the sixth and went on to work a season-high seven innings, allowing five hits while walking two and striking out five.
After Sam Sheehan pitched a perfect eighth, Angel Duno came on for the ninth and gave up three straight singles to open the frame, the third one hit by Ramon Hernandez to drive in a run and make it 8-2. After back-to-back outs were recorded, Jose Vinicio added an infield RBI single that trimmed the Stockton lead to 8-3. With runners at second and third and two outs, Duno struck out Marcus Wilson swinging to end the ballgame.
Beginning with the final out of the bottom of the fourth, Visalia pitching would set down 12 consecutive batters to get two outs deep into the eighth. Robby Sexton, Breckin Williams and Carlos Bustamante would combine for four scoreless innings of relief, allowing just one hit and one walk in that span while striking out six.
Following a day off on Monday, the Ports resume their homestand on Tuesday as they open a three-game series with the Modesto Nuts. Xavier Altamirano (4-4, 6.14 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Modesto right-hander Reggie McClain (4-11, 5.17 ERA). First pitch at Banner Island Ballpark is set for 7:10 p.m. PDT.
