Modesto Outduels Inland Empire 4-1 in Series Opener

Modesto, CA - The Inland Empire 66ers of San Bernardino loaded the bases in the first inning with no outs but settled for just one run, it proved to be the only run they would tally in 4-1 loss at Modesto. The loss dropped Inland Empire to 63-61 overall and 30-24 in the second half while the Nuts are now 52-72 overall and 22-32 in the second half.

Torii Hunter Jr. reached on an error in the first against in his first Cal League at-bat for the 66ers. Brandon Marsh followed with a single against Nuts starter Darren McCaughan and he then walked Jordan Zimmerman to load the bases. David Mackinnon followed with a RBI single to left and a 1-0 lead and the bags full with no outs. McCaughan however allowed nothing else in a 30-pitch first. He ended up going six allowing just the one unearned run and, despite allowing a base-runner every frame never let another to second base and threw just 56 more pitches. Luis Madero was dazzling for the Sixers as he allowed just one unearned run in six innings on five hits with no walks and five Ks in a no-decision. In the seventh against IE reliever Simon Mathews (4-4) with one out and runners at first and third the Sixers 3B Richie Fecteau mishandled a ball to bring in a run and a 2-1 lead. A batter later Fecteau was charged with a throwing error that brought in another run. Eventually the lead was pushed to 4-1. Noah Zavolas (1-0) was credited with the win tossing two scoreless out of the pen and David Ellingson allowed two hits in the ninth but collected his first save. Torri Hunter Jr. had three hits for Inland Empire in his debut.
