Bullpen Falters In Late Loss To Giants

Lancaster JetHawks News Release

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Ty Culbreth delivered one of his season's best performances, but the bullpen failed to protect a one-run lead in the eighth as the San Jose Giants rallied to beat the JetHawks, 4-1, on Sunday at Municipal Stadium.

The rubber-game loss handed the JetHawks (32-24, 65-61) their seventh loss in their last eight games and another series defeat in San Jose. Lancaster hasn't won a series at "Muni" since August, 2012.

Culbreth did not allow a run over seven innings and allowed just three hits. He struck out six and issued three walks.

Robert Tyler (0-1) entered in the eighth to protect the 1-0 lead and gave up a lead-off double to Brandon Van Horn. A sacrifice bunt and a walk followed, setting the stage for Heath Quinn, who doubled home both runners to give the Giants (20-36, 54-72) the lead.

Alexander Guillen relieved Tyler and allowed both inherited runners to score. Tyler was charged with his second blown save of the season and four runs on three hits.

Lancaster's lone run came in the fourth inning when Wes Rogers singled home Tyler Nevin. Nevin had reached on a single and stole second base to put himself in scoring position.

The JetHawks finished the game 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position and are now 5-for-55 with runners in scoring position in over their last seven losses.

Dylan Rheault (2-3) picked up the win in relief. Nolan Riggs picked up his second-straight save and his sixth overall.

The JetHawks have an off day Monday before beginning a three-game series at Rancho Cucamonga on Tuesday night. First pitch is 7:05 p.m.
