Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
Fargo, N.D. - Eric Kofler's league-leading fifth home run leading off the seventh inning snapped a scoreless tie as the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks defeated the Gary SouthShore RailCats 4-0 on Wednesday night. The loss spoiled a magnificent pitching performance by Gary's Willie Glen, who allowed just three hits and struck out 10 over seven innings.
The RailCats, losers of the first three games in the series, fall to 3-10 on the season. Fargo-Moorhead has won 10 of their last 11 and are 10-3 on the year.
Glen and Fargo-Moorhead starter Brandon Goltz hooked up in a classic pitcher's duel. The RailCats had the best opportunity to score when they loaded the basis with no one out in the fourth inning on a pair of singles by Steve Haake and Jermaine Allensworth and a walk to Tanner Townsend. But Nathan Haynes forced the lead runner at the plate with a ground ball to first, and Brad Vericker grounded into an inning-ending double play.
Then in the fifth inning, Gary against threatened to score when Mike Coles led off with a double to right and went to third on Chris Curry's ground out. But Alex Taylor grounded into a double play on a bouncer to the first baseman, Jesse Hoorelbeke, who stepped on first and threw home to get Coles and end the inning.
Glen was rarely threatened over the first six innings. He allowed a two-out triple to Joe Mathis in the third and an infield single to Richard Austin in the fourth, but struck out eight over those six innings. However, who had struck out in his first two at bats against Glen, drilled a home run to right to begin the seventh and give the RedHawks the lead.
Glen left after seven and the RedHawks scored three runs against Kris Regas in the eighth, keyed by a Brent Krause two-run triple, to close out the scoring. He reached double-digits in strikeouts for the third time in his RailCats career.
Glen (2-2) suffered the loss, allowing just one run over seven innings. Josh Gray (1-0) pitched a scoreless frame in relief to earn the win.
The RailCats finished with six hits. Jermaine Allensworth was 3 for 4.
The two clubs close out the series in a Thursday afternoon starting at 12:35 p.m. in Fargo. Josh Habel (1-1, 5.02) will start for Gary against former RailCat Todd George (1-0, 1.38).
