May 31, 2006 - Northern League (NL)
Calgary Vipers News Release
Calgary gave up five runs in the bottom of the first inning and another four in the eighth inning on the way to a 12-3 loss to the Edmonton Cracker-Cats Wednesday night at Telus Field. The loss is Calgary's eighth straight, dropping the team to 3-9 on the year.
Starter Quintin Oldenburg (1-2) gave up six earned runs in just four innings of work to take his second loss of the season.
Edmonton got ahead early when an error, a double and a hit batter loaded the bases in the bottom of the first for Jeremy Ware. Ware took full advantage of the situation by dropping his second homerun of the year over the outfield fence for a grand slam off Oldenburg giving the Cracker-Cats a 4-0 lead. A Ryan Hanson RBI single made it 5-0 before Calgary could get out of the inning.
The Vipers tried to battle back in the second inning and managed to put two runs on the board. Adam Shorsher reached base on a Stubby Clapp error and Drew Miller was hit by a pitch, setting the table for a Josh Carter double that drove in Shorsher and Miller to make it 5-2.
Cracker-Cats' starter Brad Bissell (1-2) didn't allow another run after that as he worked into the eighth inning, giving up just six hits to pick up his first win of the season.
Edmonton added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth on a pair of sacrifice flies and a Clapp RBI single.
The game got out of reach in the bottom of the eighth when Edmonton picked up four more runs off Calgary reliever Josh Daws to make it 12-2. Daws gave up four runs on three hits in the inning including a two-run double to Ware that gave the Cracker-Cats outfielder six RBIs on the game.
Rookie Shaun Ashman made it 12-3 in the top of the ninth inning with a pinch-hit homerun off Scott Richmond but the Vipers could not get any closer.
Nelson Castro looked good in his Viper Debut, going 2 for 5 with a single and a double as well as a couple of nice defensive plays at second base.
Calgary and Edmonton will meet in a rare morning tilt at 11:05 AM Thursday morning at Telus Field to wrap up the series. Javier Ortiz (0-1,7.45) takes the mound for the Vipers against Edmonton's Jeff Little (1-1,11.00).
Calgary will return to Foothills Stadium for a home series against the Joliet JackHammers beginning Friday night at 7:05 PM.
