JackHammers fall on Wednesday afternoon

JOLIET-The Schaumburg Flyers beat the Joliet JackHammers 2-1 Wednesday afternoon in a school-day contest. Over 7,000 youngsters watched the JackHammers fall 2-1 to the Flyers at Silver Cross Field. Joliet fell to 4-8 with the loss.

The Flyers scored two runs in the second inning against Joliet starter Brad Morenko. Josue Lopez hit a two-run home run against Morenko to make it 2-0 Schaumburg.

Joliet scored its only run in the third inning. Blake Gill, playing right field and batting in the leadoff spot in the place of the injured Mike Goss, led off the inning with a single. He moved up to second base on a single by John Lackaff. Chad Ehrnsberger had runners on at first and second with nobody out and hit an RBI double to score Gill and cut the Schaumburg lead to 2-1.

That is the way the game ended. After the second inning, the 'Hammers and Flyers combined for only four more hits the rest of the way. The Flyers got a single off Morenko in the third inning. Joliet got a single in the fourth, sixth, and eighth innings.

Brad Morenko suffered the loss. He pitched seven innings and allowed two runs on four hits, walking three and striking out three. Newcomer Victor Kleine pitched one and one-thirds innings and struck out two. Amad Stephens pitched two-thirds of an inning to get his first work in since May 26 when the JackHammers opened up their home stand against the Edmonton Cracker Cats.

The JackHammers finish their home stand 2-4 with the loss. The sweep by Schaumburg marked the second time this year the JackHammers have been swept. Joliet lost the first three games of the season to the Winnipeg Goldeyes May 19-21.

The JackHammers take Thursday off before heading to Calgary to start a series with the Vipers on Friday night. First pitch is at 8:00 on Friday and pre game coverage begins at 7:45 on 1340 WJOL.

Loose Gravel: The JackHammers signed right-handed relief pitcher Jonathon Merrill before the game. Merrill was signed to a one-day contract before the game. The JackHammers next home stand is June 13-18 at Silver Cross Field.
