Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, IN - The Gary SouthShore RailCats activated infielder Danny Pulfer from the disabled list prior to Wednesday's 5-4 defeat against the Wichita Wingnuts. To make room on the active roster, pitcher Taylor Sewitt was placed on irrevocable waivers.
Danny went 1-for-3 with an RBI in his first game since being hit by a pitch by St. Paul reliever John Plefka on July 26th. For the season, the second baseman is hitting .268 with one home run and 26 driven in; in 53 games for the RailCats.
Taylor Sewitt made the team out of training camp as a rookie from Manhatten College. Sewitt was a valuable reliever for the RailCats early in the season and at the time of his release; had the second most appearances by a RailCats pitcher with 36. In 53 and 2/3 innings he recorded a 5.03 ERA, allowed 71 hits, walked 15 and struck out 22. He had a 9 and 1/3 inning scoreless streak in the first three weeks of the season.
Sewitt was claimed off waivers by the Winnipeg Goldeyes.
Before Thursday's game, the RailCats re-signed pitcher Will Krout and traded pitcher Joe Zeller to the Sioux City Explorers for a player to be named later.
Krout was released by the RailCats on July 21 after making 13 starts in 2013. He went 2-5 with a 5.87 ERA in 79 and 2/3 innings during his third season with the team.
Since his release, Will helped pitch the Fort Worth Cats to an appearance in the United League Championship; where they lost in five games to the Edinburg Roadrunners. Including the playoffs, Krout went 2-1 with a 3.74 ERA in six total appearances and five starts. In 33 and 2/3 innings he allowed 33 hits, walked four and struck out 18.
Joe Zeller, a knuckleballer, made just one start for the RailCats. On Wednesday night he went 3 and 1/3 innings and allowed eight runs, six earned, on seven hits and three walks. The right-hander took the loss in the RailCats 18-5 defeat against the Wichita Wingnuts.
Additionally, the RailCats placed infielder Christian Vitters on the disabled list. The roster stands at 21 with two on the disabled list (Vitters and Alain Quijano) and two on the inactive list (Ari Ronick and Marco Gonzalez) prior to Friday night's game with St. Paul.
The roster deadline for players to be eligible for the playoff roster is Friday night at 11:59 p.m. Beginning August 24, teams in the American Association may carry 23 players on their active roster and utilize the disabled and inactive lists under the same requirements as stated during the regular season.
The RailCats begin their final road trip of the regular season tonight in St. Paul with a three-game series against the Saints. Listen live to RailCats baseball on 89.1 FM The Lakeshore or online at RailCatsBaseball.com beginning at 7:00 p.m.
