Clearwater Threshers News Release
TAMPA, Fla. - Bailey Falter dealt six scoreless innings in his first start off the disabled list, and the Threshers withstood a late Tampa rally to hold off the Tarpons, 4-3 on Tuesday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
With the win, combined with Dunedin's loss at Daytona, Clearwater now sits just a half game back of the Blue Jays with 25 games remaining in the regular season.
Following a delay of an hour and one minute, Falter returned to the hill for his first start since July 4, as the lefty was activated from the disabled list on Tuesday.
The Threshers (28-16) (60-52) spotted him a two-run lead, cashing in on four walks issued by Tampa starter Rony Garcia (0-3) in the third inning.
After Raul Rivas walked to start the frame, Kevin Markham hit a Baltimore chop over third baseman Angel Aguilar for a single, and Arquimedes Gamboa drew a walk to load the bases. Mickey Moniak worked a base on balls to push home a run, and with one out, Edgar Cabral did the same to make it 2-0 Clearwater.
The Threshers doubled their advantage in the sixth.
Luke Williams got it going against reliever Kaleb Ort with a single to left-center, and stole second. With one out, Kyle Martin drew a walk, and Rivas followed with a single through the right side to score Williams and make it 3-0.
Markham lined the first pitch he saw into left, and Gamboa worked a walk to force home Martin and extend the lead to 4-0.
Falter (6-4) exited after six scoreless innings, permitting only three hits (all singles) and did not issue a walk.
Trevor Bettencourt worked a perfect seventh inning and struck out two, before a swinging bunt off the bat of Steven Sensely opened the eighth, with Cabral throwing wide of first for an error, and Jerry Seitz hit a sharp grounder off the leg off Bettencourt for Tampa's first hit since the second inning.
After a walk to Hoy Jun Park, Diego Castillo singled to right to break up a string of 22.1 consecutive scoreless innings by Threshers pitching.
Bettencourt exited in favor of Jakob Hernandez, and Estevan Floridal knocked a single to center to score a run and make it 4-2. Isiah Gilliam followed with a sacrifice fly to bring the lead down to one. Hernandez struck out Ben Ruta, but Cabral's throw down to first pulled Martin off the bag, loading the bases with the tying run at third.
Hernandez proceeded to strike out Aguilar on three pitches to end the inning.
The lefty returned for the bottom of the ninth and picked up two more strikeouts, working around a one-out walk to earn his third save for Clearwater.
The series finale will take place on Wednesday with first pitch at 6:30 p.m., as Ramon Rosso toes the rubber against Dalton Lehnen. The game will be broadcast live on threshersbaseball.com beginning at 6:15 p.m.
