St. Lucie Mets News Release
JUPITER, Fla. - The long ball and clutch pitching lifted the St. Lucie Mets to a 3-1 victory against the Jupiter Hammerheads on Tuesday at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.
Jupiter pitcher Ryan Lillie was throwing a perfect game through 5.2 innings when Mets left fielder Anthony Dimino stunned the ballpark by bashing a solo home run to center field.
The homer, Dimino's second in as many games, broke up the perfect game, no-hitter and shutout. It also tied the game 1-1.
Luis Carpio kept the momentum going by following with a double. Then Gene Cone raked a RBI single to right field to put the Mets up 2-1.
Mets starter Michael Gibbons scattered eight hits but never unraveled. The only run he allowed came on a RBI single by Anfernee Seymour in the third inning. Gibbons pitched 6.2 innings and struck out a season-high eight batters. He threw 102 pitches and won his second straight start.
The Hammerheads went 1 for 12 with runners in scoring position. They wasted a leadoff triple in the seventh inning. Gibbons got a strikeout and a ground out, then catcher Ali Sanchez caught Tristan Pompey stealing second base.
Seth Davis turned in a scoreless eighth.
Trey Cobb pitched a perfect ninth to earn his first save with St. Lucie.
Mike Paez waited until the last minute to extend his hitting streak to 18 games. He launched a long solo home run in the ninth to add an insurance run. It was his 11th homer of the year.
The Mets (18-25, 45-65) and Hammerheads (17-25, 58-53) play the rubber game of their series on Wednesday. First pitch from Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium is 6:30 p.m. The Mets are seeking their third consecutive series victory.
