Falcons Surrender Three Goals in Second; Lose 5-1

Portland, ME - The Springfield Falcons allowed three goals in the second period in a 5-1 loss to the Portland Pirates on Wednesday night at the Cross Insurance Arena.

The Pirates struck first with an even strength goal from Rocco Grimaldi at 4:51. The forward grabbed a loose puck in the slot to score past the blocker of goaltender Louis Domingue for his second goal of the season. Assists on the goal were given to Rob Schremp and Garrett Wilson. The Falcons responded nearly five minutes later with a power play goal from Alex Grant for his fifth of the season. The defenseman ripped a slap shot from the point with assists credited to Jon DiSalvatore and Craig Cunningham. The Pirates regained their lead with a tally from Corban Knight for his first goal of the season in his first game of the season. The forward scored on a one-timer with assists from John McFarland and Brett Olson. The goal was scored at 14:44 and gave the Pirates a 2-1 lead heading into the second period.

The Pirates struck for three goals in the second period with Michael Matheson beginning the scoring for his third of the season at 11:57. Shane Harper and Grimaldi assisted on the goal. Grimaldi would score his second of the night after a turnover in the Falcons zone at 15:29. Schremp completed the scoring in the frame with a slap shot at the hash marks for his ninth of the season on the power play. The goal was scored at 16:10 with helpers coming from Grimaldi and Knight. The Pirates took a 5-1 lead into the third.

The third period displayed no scoring with the Pirates outshooting the Falcons 11-8 in the stanza. Each team totaled 29 shots during the course of the game. Domingue fell to a 6-6-1 record stopping 24 shots while Pirates netminder Sam Brittain improved to a 4-3-0 record making 28 saves.

The Falcons return home to the MassMutual Center on Friday for Star Wars Night against the Binghamton Senators at 7 p.m. Specialty Star Wars themed jerseys will be worn and actioned off exclusively during the game. The proceeds of the auction will benefit the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hampden County.
