Syracuse Crunch News Release
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Jeff Tambellini and Yanni Gourde found the back of the net for the Syracuse Crunch, but the team could not overcome six goals-against and were downed by the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, 6-2, tonight at Mohegan Sun Arena.
Syracuse drops to 10-9-2-1 and extends their skid to three games. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton breaks their three-game streak and are now 17-5-0-0 with a 1-0 lead in the four-game season series.
Crunch goaltender Kristers Gudlevskis stopped 29 of 35 shots in defeat. His Penguins counterpart, Matt Murray, allowed two goals on 32 shots. Syracuse was productive on the power play, going 1-for-4. The penalty kill unit had perfect success, shutting down all five Wilkes-Barre/Scranton man-advantages.
For the 13th time this season, the Penguins were first on the board. The team notched a pair of goals within 40 seconds, beginning just 3:14 into the game. Bryan Rust fired from the slot, but was turned aside. However, Tom Kuhnhackl was there to net the rebound. Less than a minute later, the Crunch turned the puck over and allowed Tom Kostopoulos to light the lamp with the help of Oskar Sundqvist.
At the 11:30 mark, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton built a three-goal lead. Conor Sheary beat Crunch defenders and let off a wrist shot from the left circle. Assists went to Kuhnhackl and Niclas Andersen.
The Crunch finally retaliated while on the man-advantage early in the middle frame. Tanner Richard passed across the zone to Jeff Tambellini on the left wing side. He fired a slapshot past Murray for his team-leading ninth of the season. Matt Taormina recorded a point on the tally.
The Penguins added three more in the third period. At the 6:11 mark, Kevin Porter fired a shot that was saved, but Dominik Simon buried it on the second chance. Steve Oleksy grabbed the secondary assist. A few minutes later, Simon struck again on the breakaway. One final goal by Dominik Uher with a minute remaining in the period put the Penguins' total at six.
Yanni Gourde chipped one in off Philippe Paradis and Luke Witkowski with 29 seconds on the clock to steal one back for the Crunch, but it was not enough and the team fell to the Penguins, 6-2.
The Crunch travel to face the Albany Devils on Friday, Dec. 11 at 7 p.m.
