Springfield Falcons News Release
Springfield, Mass. â Manchester Monarchs goaltender Mathieu Garon made 32 saves in a 2-0 shutout of the Springfield Falcons at the Springfield Civic Center on Friday evening. The Falcons outshot the Monarchs, 32-19, but were not able to beat Garon. Forwards Michael Cammalleri and Tom Kostopoulos provided the scoring for Manchester.
The Monarchs grabbed a 1-0 lead 8:07 into the game when Cammalleri scored his seventh goal of the season. Cammalleri wrestled the puck from Falcons defenseman Paul Ranger at center ice and then finished a two-man rush with linemate Dustin Brown as the pair skated in alone on goaltender Jamie Storr. Cammalleri has recorded points in nine of the Monarchs' ten games this season.
Eight seconds after Manchester's second power play of the game expired right wing Tom Kostopoulos scored from the edge of the crease after receiving a blind pass out of the corner by rookie Matt Ryan. The goal, which came at the 15:50 mark, was the fourth of the season for Kostopoulos.
The Falcons threatened to narrow the two-goal gap in the second period and held an 11-5 shot advantage during the frame. Forward Shane Willis and defenseman Doug O'Brien each had good scoring chances in the slot for Springfield, but the period ended without a goal.
Springfield continued to pressure in the third period, outshooting the Monarchs 17-3. However, Garon thwarted each Falcons attempt en route to registering his third shutout of the season.
Tempers flared toward the end of the game. The clubs combined to accumulate 46 penalty minutes during a pair of melees over the final four minutes.
Storr made 17 saves in the Springfield net.
Each team finished the game scoreless on five power-play opportunities.
Right wing Nikita Alexeev returned to Falcons' lineup after missing seven games due to an injury suffered on Oct. 22 at Portland.
The Falcons return to home ice of the Civic Center to face the Worcester IceCats on Saturday night. Game time is 7:35 p.m. For tickets visit the Springfield Civic Center box office or order by phone at (413) 787-6600 or (800) 639-8602.
