Portland Pirates News Release

PORTLAND, ME – The Portland Pirates are proud to announce that we will once again host the official Salvation Army of Maine Kettle Kickoff, during our Sunday, November 28th game with the Norfolk Admirals. That event will be held at the Cumberland County Civic Center, with the opening face-off at 4:05 PM. Govenor John Baldacci, who will serve as this year's Honorary Chair of the Kettle Campaign in Maine, is scheduled to attend and participate in a special between periods ceremony designating the beginning of the charity's biggest fund raiser. "[the Salvation Army] is proud to have the Governor give a public boost to our annual fund raising efforts," explained Portland Corps Officer Captain Andrew Ferreira. "We hope his participation will encourage others to join in." The Kettles will be at Pirates games starting on November 19th and concluding on December 23rd.

Prior to face-off, fans will enjoy traditional Salvation Army music and will be able to contribute funds at designated "Celebrity Kettles" manned by local personalities. "Army Pucks" will be available for a special intermission event at which spectators will try to toss the puck into a giant kettle on the ice. The closest to the kettle will win Pirates merchandise and a ticket package of 5 flex tickets from the Pirates.

The "Kettle Kickoff with the Portland Pirates" marks the beginning of The Salvation Army's most visible fundraising effort. The Portland Corps aims to raise more than $150,000 for community and youth programs which benefit hundreds of area residents. All told, The Army will provide holiday assistance for almost 80,000 people in the Northern New England region!
