Fresno Falcons News Release

Fresno, Calif. - The Fresno Falcons jumped out to a pair of one-goal leads but were eventually reeled in by the Idaho Steelheads' power play as the Falcons lost to the defending Kelly Cup Champions, 5-2, at Save Mart Center.

Fresno's Charles Simard gave his club its first lead of the young season when he blasted a slapper top shelf from the left circle at 11:54 of the opening period, and the Falcons skated to the second out in front, 1-0.

The Steelheads capitalized quickly on their first power play of the evening at 7:40 of the second when Justin Cox re-directed a pass from Peter Metcalf past Fresno netminder Simon Lajeunesse to tie the game at one. The Falcons responded with a power play goal of their own at 9:12 off Lanny Gare's deflection of a Curtis Sheptak slapshot to reclaim a one-goal edge. But yet again Fresno's penalty kill failed to hold the advantage as Idaho's Warren Peters found a loose puck in front that he easily deposited into an empty net at 11:06 to tie the game at two. After finally killing off two Steelheads power plays, the Falcons' defense turned into its own worst enemy. A giveaway from behind the Fresno net eventually led to a mad scramble in front and a goal from Scott Burt, giving the visitors a 3-2 lead heading into the final period.

Cox gave Idaho some breathing room with an insurance goal off a deflection again on the power play at 11:18 of the third before he added an empty-netter for the hat trick in the game's final minute.

With the loss the Falcons fall to 0-4-0 after giving up at least three power play goals for the third time in four games.

The same two teams battle again tomorrow at 7 p.m. in the second game of a three-game set at Save Mart Center that concludes on Sunday at 5 p.m.

Single-game tickets for both Saturday and Sunday's games are now on sale for as low as $8 per seat. Tickets may be purchased directly at Save Mart Center's box office and all Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at 485-TIXS (8497) or online at www.ticketmaster.com.
