Falcons Fall Prey to Bruins 3-2
February 14, 2016 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Springfield Falcons News Release
Springfield, MA - The Springfield Falcons fell behind early on Sunday evening and couldn't recover as they lost to the Providence Bruins by a score of 3-2 at the MassMutual Center. The Bruins opened the scoring just minutes into the game as they crashed the Springfield net. Tommy Cross fed Justin Hickman at the side of the net where he fired a shot on Marek Langhamer. Langhamer made the initial save, but Colby Cave smacked in the rebound for his tenth of the season at the 2:49 mark. Providence picked up an insurance marker just moments later when Austin Czarnik fed Alexander Khokhlachev in front of the net for a tap-in goal past Langhamer. The tally, Khokhlachev's fifteenth of the season, was scored on the power play at 10:43. Frank Vatrano also added an assist on the marker.
The Falcons would get on the board just over a minute later thanks to a power play goal of their own.
Dustin Jeffrey won an offensive zone face-off directly to Philip Samuelsson, whose point shot was tipped into the net by Craig Cunningham for his eleventh goal of the season.
The goalies stole the show in the second period, as both Langhamer and Zane McIntyre made several key saves. Langhamer was tested first, as Khokhlachev came in on a breakaway but was stopped by a pad save. McIntyre would make two big saves of his own, both against Laurent Dauphin. The first shot came on a rebound attempt, while the second took place on a Falcon power play in the final minute. The saves kept the game at a 2-1 Bruins score through two periods of play.
Providence would make it a 3-1 game in the final minutes as Colton Hargrove found Brian Ferlin alone in the slot. Ferlin made a nifty move to beat Langhamer for his first of the season at 17:50. Andrew Cherniwchan would register an assist on the goal. The Falcons made things interesting in the last minute of play by pulling Langhamer for the extra attacker. Michael Bunting kept a play alive in the offensive zone by finding Matthias Plachta down low. Plachta fed Dauphin in front of the net, who zipped a shot over the shoulder of McIntyre to make it 3-2 game at 19:04. Langhamer made 24 saves in the loss as his record on the season fell to 3-3-1. McIntyre made 28 saves in the win, which upped his season record to 8-6-5.
The Falcons home stand continues on Tuesday night when they host the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at the MassMutual Center at 7:00 p.m. The team will play in Lehigh Valley on Friday night before hosting the Hartford Wolf Pack next Saturday night at 7:00 p.m.
