Springfield Falcons News Release

In their first home game since December 13, the Springfield Falcons dropped a close one to the Providence Bruins on Friday night falling to the Bruins by a 2-1 score in front of 5,463 in a shootout at the MassMutual Center.

Falcons head coach Rob Riley says the game was a frustrating one. "We out-played and out-chanced them the whole game," said Riley. Providence goaltender Anton Khudobin denied 39 of the Falcons' 40 shots on goal in the game. "Khudobin did it to us again. He has done it this year and he did it last year," said Riley.

In the first period, the Falcons out-shot the Bruins 11-6, but were unable to convert on a power play in the final minutes to gain a lead. The Bruins jumped on a shorthanded 2-on-1 break at 18:00, and Manny Legace shut down the scoring chance to keep Providence off the board. The first frame came to a close with the teams scoreless and momentum favoring the Falcons.

The Falcons pressure was matched by a Providence goal in the second period. Bobby Robins scored his first goal of the season for the Bruins at 12:22, beating Legace on the doorstep to give the Falcons a 1-0 deficit after two periods of play.

In the third period, the Falcons poured on the pressure and leveled the score. At 9:52, Brent Regner whistled a shot through the crease for Mayorov to redirect into the back of the net for his second goal of the season. The Falcons goal remained the only in the period, sending the teams into overtime with the score locked at 1-1.

With the overtime finishing scoreless, the game was settled in a shootout. Through five rounds of the shootout the Bruins managed two goals to the Falcons one. The Falcons' Matt Calvert and Mayorov were both beat by the post in the shootout to give the Bruins their first win in three games.

The Falcons finish out their 2011 calendar with a New Year's Eve matchup against the Connecticut Whale at 5 p.m. on Saturday. In their fifth meeting this season, the Falcons look to capture their first win against the Whale tomorrow afternoon when they head to Hartford.

"We need to regroup here in the next hour, and get our lineup ready for tomorrow. No time to think about this one anymore," said Riley.
