Springfield Falcons News Release
Springfield, MA - The Springfield Falcons were shutout 3-0 on Sunday night at the MassMutual Center by the Hartford Wolf Pack.
Hartford opened the scoring in the hockey game around the midway point of the first frame thanks to a blistering shot from Marek Hrivik. Raphael Diaz kept the puck in the offensive zone and fed it to Nicklas Jensen, who dropped the puck off to Hrivik. Using his speed, the Wolf Pack forward got himself open in the slot and rifled a shot past Niklas Treutle for his ninth goal of the season at the 9:20 mark.
Treutle had a strong second period making seven stops, but none better than denying Luke Adam not once, but twice on the same sequence to keep the score at 1-0. Jeff Malcolm was equal to the task, making a spectacular save of his own to keep the Wolf Pack ahead late in the period. After a point-shot was blocked, the puck squirted free to Brendan Shinnimin who came in on a breakaway but was stoned by Malcolm.
Hartford wasted no time extending their lead in the third period. Right as a Falcon penalty expired, Calle Andersson shot the puck from the far boards past Treutle for his fourth of the season. Jayson Megna and Mat Bodie assisted on the insurance goal scored eleven seconds into the third period. Jensen finished the scoring by picking up a rebound from a Chris Brown shot and fired it past Treutle for his 16th of the year. Chris Summers recorded an assist on the goal scored on the power play at 17:51. Treutle made 23 saves in the loss, which downed his record on the year to 11-15-5. Malcolm made 26 saves for the shutout, which helped him improve to 7-5-0.
The Falcons hit the road on Tuesday night when they visit the Albany Devils at 7:00 p.m. The team will then travel to Portland next weekend to take on the Pirates on Friday and Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. All three games can be heard live on NewsRadio560 WHYN.
