Falcons Beat Monarchs 4-3

The Springfield Falcons and Manchester Monarchs played a playoff-type game on Wednesday night at the MassMutual Center with the Falcons edging the Monarchs 4-3 to take a three-point lead in the battle for the fourth and final playoff spot within the Atlantic Division.

For the second straight game, the Falcons built an early two-goal lead as Viacheslav Trukhno opened the scoring at 3:42 of the first period on the power play, followed by Stephen Werner's marker on the man advantage at 13:54 of the opening frame. Werner's marker occurred during Springfield's five-minute power play after Manchester's Brady Murray was whistled for a major penalty for kneeing Springfield's Tim Sestito.

Manchester responded in the second period as Patrik Hersley scored during a two-man advantage just 2:06 in the middle stanza cutting their deficit to 2-1. Springfield regained a two-goal advantage at 10:20 of the second period when Jonas Almtorp scored his second goal of the year giving the Falcons a 3-1 lead.

Springfield built a 4-1 lead at 8:45 of the third period when Rob Schremp tallied on the man advantage. In a game that was filled with power play goals, Manchester cut their deficit to 4-3 with a pair of power play markers just two minutes apart late in the final frame as Matt Moulson and Brian Boyle inched the Monarchs to within one, but the Falcons held on for the must needed two points.

GAME NOTES

The Falcons released Tommy Goebel from his ATO contract.

Manchester was 3-11 on the power play while Springfield was 3-9.

Viachelsav Trukhno extended his scoring streak to nine games.

Rob Schremp extended his scoring streak to seven games.

Manchester's Brady Murray received a major penalty for kneeing Springfield's Tim Sestito in the first period. Sestito was ok and finished the game.
