Albany Devils News Release
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Lowell Devils were unable to overcome a two-goal effort by Kurtis McLean as they fell to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, 3-1, on Wednesday at the Wachovia Arena. The win was the Penguins' ninth in a row, tying a franchise record.
After a scoreless first period, the opening minutes of the second saw a flurry of goals. The Penguins were able to take a 1-0 lead at 1:14 of the frame McLean's slapshot from the left point snuck through the five-hole of goalie Frank Doyle.
The Devils knotted the score less than two minutes later with their first power play of the game. They needed only eight seconds of the man-advantage to convert as Barry Tallackson sent a pass through the slot that Petr Vrana one-timed past John Curry from the far circle. Grant Marshall picked up the second assist on Vrana's 13th goal of the season.
The tie was short-lived as Wilkes-Barre/Scranton took back its one goal lead at 5:07 on a power play of its own. McLean's second of the night put his team up, 2-1, when he got loose on the near dot and tapped in a centering pass from Jean-Michel Daoust.
Curry would go on to deny the Devils for the remainder of the contest, finishing with 20-of-21 saves. Nathan Smith added an insurance marker for the Penguins with 5:50 left in the game. Doyle suffered the loss as he stopped 20 of the 23 shots he faced.
Lowell went 1-for-2 on the power play and 1-for-2 on the penalty kill.
The Devils go on to play the first of two games against the Norfolk Admirals on Friday, March 21 at 7:15 p.m. Listen to all of the Devils' action on WCAP-980AM with Ryan Johnston bringing you all of the play-by-play.
