Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
San Bernardino, CA-- The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes and the Inland Empire 66ers went to extra-innings for the second straight game, but on Wednesday it was the 66ers coming out on top, 5-4, in 13 innings at San Manuel Stadium.
David Fletcher drove home Ayendy Perez in the bottom of the 13th to win it for Inland Empire, in a four-hour 25-minute marathon ballgame.
The Quakes jumped all over 66ers starter Justin Anderson in the first inning for two runs. After Erick Mejia singled and Tim Locastro was hit with a pitch for a team-leading 17th time this season, Edwin Rios extended his hitting streak to 16 games by lining a double to left field that scored Mejia to make it a 1-0 game. The next hitter, Matt Beaty, hit an RBI groundout to score Locastro to make it 2-0.
The game stayed that way until the third, when Rancho Cucamonga struck for another run. After Mejia led off the inning with a single, he stole second base and advanced to third on a balk by 66ers' starter Justin Anderson. Rios then drove in his second run of the day by hitting an RBI groundout to give the Quakes a 3-0 lead.
Inland Empire battled back to take the lead in the seventh inning. After Quakes' starter Tommy Bergjans walked Roberto Baldoquin and allowed back-to-back singles from Ryan Sebra and Ayendy Perez to drive in a run, he was chased and in came Kevin Brown to protect a 3-1 lead. Brown allowed an RBI single to David Fletcher, a walk to Hutton Moyer and then a two-run ground-rule double to Taylor Ward, who made it a 4-3 game.
Rancho Cucamonga fought back and tied the game in the ninth to force extra innings. Ariel Sandoval singled to lead off the inning, and went first-to-third on a Joey Curletta single. Donavan Tate then stepped in, and hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Sandoval and tying the game at 4-4. After Jeff Malm tossed a clean ninth, the game went to extras.
The two teams traded zeros until the bottom of the 13th inning, when the 66ers notched the walk-off win. Ayendy Perez, who was on base five times on Wednesday, singled to lead off the inning, and promptly stole second base. David Fletcher followed by blooping a single to right field, scoring Perez to win the game.
Nate Fury (1-2) picked up the win after pitching a scoreless 13th inning. Anderson went four innings in his start, and allowed three runs on three hits, while walking three. The Inland Empire bullpen combined for one earned run on seven hits in nine innings of work on Wednesday.
Kyle Hooper (1-2) was tabbed with the loss after allowing the winning run in the 13th inning. Bergjans was masterful for the second straight start, pitching 6.1 innings, and allowing just three earned runs on four hits, striking out eight.
With the loss, Rancho (9-5, 51-33) had their season-high six game-winning streak snapped. On Thursday, Rancho will look to win the series from Inland Empire as the teams revert back to the regularly scheduled 7:05 p.m. start. Right-hander Grant Holmes (7-3, 3.38 ERA) will take the ball for the Quakes on Thursday, while Inland Empire will send Jeremy Rhoades (2-8, 5.70) to the mound.
After the Quakes' eight-game road trip, Rancho returns to LoanMart Field on Wednesday, July 13th for a Terra Vista Animal Hospital Bark in the Ballpark. Tickets are still available by calling (909) 481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com. Go Quakes!
