Visalia Rawhide News Release

VISALIA, CA - The Visalia Rawhide announce today that 3B Dawel Lugo has been honored as the California League Player of the Week for the period of June 27th - July 3rd.

A 6'0", 190-pound right-handed swinger, Lugo hit the ball at a torrid pace throughout the week. The Bani, Dominican Republic native hit .517, going 15-for-29 in seven games. He added a double, a triple and three home runs, while driving in seven and striking out only twice. He slugged a ridiculous .931 and his on-base average was .517, accounting for his 1.448 OPS. He led the league over the period in total bases (27), batting average, on-base average, slugging average and OPS.

Lugo, who was named a 2016 California League All-Star, is hitting .310 (94-for-303) for Visalia. He's added 12 doubles, five triples, 40 RBIs and a career-high 13 home runs. The Rawhide won the week, going 4-3 with Lugo setting the pace and the icing on the cake was the cycle that Lugo hit for on Tuesday, July 5th against Lancaster in a 10-6 win.

For his career he has hit .272 (454-for-1671) over seven minor league seasons. He's connected for 62 doubles, 18 triples, 13 home runs and 40 RBIs. In 427 minor league games he has an on-base average of .303, a slugging average of .384 and an OPS of .687.

Originally a Toronto Blue Jays international free agent signee in 2011, Lugo came to the Arizona organization in a trade that saw SS Cliff Pennington and cash go to the Blue Jays. Lugo becomes the second member of the Rawhide in 2016 to be named a California League Player of the Week (1B/DH Rudy Flores - May 2nd - May 8th) after Visalia netted five of them in 2015 (RF Todd Glaesman, RHP Zack Godley, RHP Blake Perry, OF Mitch Haniger and LHP Anthony Banda). He also follows Glaesman by hitting for the cycle, who did it last season, and becomes the second member of the Rawhide to complete the feat since 2B Derek Bruce did it in 2007 when they were the Oaks.

The Rawhide continue their road trip tonight against the Lancaster JetHawks at "The Hangar" with a 6:35 p.m. first pitch. 2016 marks the 70th year of baseball in Visalia at Recreation Ballpark and the 10th season as an Arizona Diamondback affiliate in the California League.
