Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
San Bernardino, CA-- The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes blew a 4-2 lead with two out in the ninth inning, but game back to win it in extra-innings fashion, 7-4, in game two against the Inland Empire 66ers at San Manuel Stadium in San Bernardino.
Matt Beaty drove in the game-winning run with a double off the left field wall in the eleventh inning to win it for the Quakes.
Inland Empire scored first in the first inning off of Yaisel Sierra. Tim Arakawa led off the inning with a walk, and eventually came around to score after Sierra uncorked a wild pitch to give the 66ers a 1-0 lead after an inning of play.
Rancho Cucamonga came back to take the lead in the second inning, behind three home runs. Matt Beaty, Johan Mieses, and Mike Ahmed all went deep for solo shots to give Rancho Cucamonga a 3-1 lead.
Ayendy Perez cut into Inland Empire's deficit in the second inning. After Jeff Bohem singled and Ryan Sebra doubled with two out, Perez hit a single to center field. Bohem scored to make it 3-2, but Sebra was thrown out at the plate to end the inning after Johan Mieses delivered a strike to catcher Garrett Kennedy. Mieses' seventh outfield-assist of the season preserved the lead.
The Quakes added an insurance run in the ninth, after Ariel Sandoval hit a sacrifice fly to score Tim Locastro to make it 4-2.
However, the Quakes coughed up the lead in the bottom of the ninth. After Adam Bray got the first two hitters out, he ran into trouble. Ayendy Perez, who went 4-for-5 and fell a home run shy of the cycle, tripled to start the tailspin. The next hitter, Tim Arakawa, walked, setting up Taylor Ward with runners on the corners with two out. Ward connected on a single to left field, scoring Perez to make it a 4-3 game. That chased Bray from the game, and in came Wes Helsabeck to face Hutton Moyer. The switch hitter turned around to hit right-handed against the lefty Helsabeck, and he singled to center field to score Arakawa from second base, tying the game at four. Helsabeck got Wade Wass to strike out looking to end the threat and force extra innings.
Both teams traded zeros in the tenth inning, but Rancho broke the tie in the 11th. With two on and one out, Beaty ripped a two-run double to give the Quakes a 6-4 lead. The next hitter, Sandoval, roped a single past a drawn-in infield to score Beaty from third and give Rancho a 7-4 lead. Kyle Hooper then came on and pitched a 1-2-3 11th to nail down his second save.
Beaty went 3-for-5 with a home run, double and three RBI, and now has at least one RBI in nine of his past ten games. Every Quakes starter had at least one hit with the exception of Julian Leon and Garrett Kennedy.
The win goes to Wes Helsabeck (1-0) after 1.1 scoreless innings of relief.
Sierra started the game, and posted his best start in a month. He went six innings, and allowed two earned runs on seven hits, striking out four. Sierra was outrighted to the minor leagues after being removed from the Dodgers 40-man roster earlier this week.
Jason Hoppe (0-2) was charged with the loss after allowing three earned runs on four hits in two innings. 66ers starter Zach Nuding went the first five innings, and allowed three runs on four hits. After giving up three home runs in the second inning, Nuding retired the last 11 hitters he faced.
Rancho (9-4, 51-32) now moves to a season-best, 19 games over the .500 mark with their sixth straight win. On Wednesday morning, Rancho will look to go on their longest winning streak of the year, as they aim for a seventh straight win in San Bernardino. Right-hander Tommy Bergjans (3-8) will take the ball for the Quakes on Tuesday, while Inland Empire will send Justin Anderson (4-7) to the mound. Game time is at 11:00 a.m., a special start time to accommodate summer camp day at San Manuel Stadium.
After the Quakes' eight-game road trip, Rancho returns to LoanMart Field on Wednesday, July 13th for a Terra Vista Animal Hospital Bark in the Ballpark. tickets are still available by calling (909) 481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com. Go Quakes!
