Brockton Rox News Release
Brockton, MA (July 27, 2008) - The Brockton Rox season-high seven-game win streak came to an end on Sunday afternoon as Sussex defeated Brockton 4-3 in 11 innings at Skylands Park in Augusta, NJ. Skyhawks' 3B Jay Yaconetti drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 11th with a sacrifice fly when 1B Matt Weston slid across the plate, ending the Rox win streak, and its hopes of a series sweep.
Sussex took the first lead of the game, but trailed for the majority of the contest. The Skyhawks scored in the first inning when CF Ron Perodin scored after a two-base error by starting pitcher RHP Stevie Delabar. Brockton tied the score at 1-1 thanks to a Sussex error in the top of the Sussex.
2B Melvin Falu gave the Rox the final runs it would score in the game with a two-run home run in the third inning. His eighth home run of the season put the Rox in front 3-1.
Sussex did not score again until the seventh inning when 1B Matt Weston hit a solo home run off of Delabar. It was the only earned run Delabar allowed in seven innings of work. He allowed seven hits and a walk while striking out two. RHP Matt Zachary entered for the eighth inning, and allowed the game-tying run on an RBI double by RF Jorge Moreno. Zachary settled in and pitched three innings before leaving before the start of the 11th inning.
The decisive run came across quickly in the bottom of the 11th inning against Rox RHP Ryan Williams. Weston led off with a walk and then went to third base on a single by 2B Chris Brown. Yaconetti drove the first pitch he saw to right-centerfield to bring home the winning run.
Rox LF Dennis Abreu had two hits in the game to extend his hitting streak to 26 games. He is now just one game shy of the Can-Am League record set by former Rox 3B Jake Daubert in 2005. The Rox will try to get back in the win column on Monday night with a double-header against the Nashua Pride. The Rox and Pride will be making up a rainout from Thursday, July 24th. The teams will play two, seven-inning games with the first scheduled to begin at 6:05 PM at Holman Stadium in Nashua, NH.
