Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - The Kannapolis Intimidators (22-20, 50-60) battled in a pitcher's duel with the Lexington Legends (16-25, 53-57) all Saturday night, and eventually pulled out the win late in the 11th inning, 3-2, at Intimidators Stadium supported by Atrium Health.
Errors killed the Intimidators early on in this one. Davis Martin recorded a strikeout to start the game in the top of the first, but the next batter hit a fairly routine grounder that rolled under Corey Zangari's glove at first base and allowed him to reach. Shortly after, the runner, Jeison Guzman, stole second, and an errant throw from Gunnar Troutwine allowed Guzman to advance to third. Nathan Eaton later drove Guzman in with a sac fly to take a 1-0 lead for the Legends.
The early defensive issues didn't faze Davis Martin at all. Over his next four innings on the mound, he allowed just one hit, and he got out of a tough jam scoreless in the fifth inning after walking a couple batters. This brought his final line for the day to five innings pitched, two hits allowed, no earned runs, seven strikeouts, and two walks. Declan Cronin came in for relief of Martin.
Despite the good pitching, things hadn't been going to well for Kannapolis at the plate. In the bottom of the fifth, however, Ramon Beltre tied things up. On the first pitch he saw in the at-bat, he hit a solo shot (3) that just cleared the left field wall and made things 1-1.
Cronin and Lane Ramsey pitched a combined scoreless four innings as the stalemate headed into extra innings.
In the top of the tenth with the bases loaded and a full count, Ramsey threw a pitch that the umpire thought had just missed the strike zone and walked Eric Cole in to score and give Lexington the 2-1 lead.
In the bottom half of the frame, Gunnar Troutwine started things off with a sac bunt that moved Cam Simmons over to third. Down to their last strike, Ian Dawkins came through with a single to drive Simmons home and tie things, 2-2.
Justin O'Conner came in to pitch the 11th, making his Intimidators debut. After hitting the first batter with a pitch, he struck out the side to take us to the bottom of the frame.
With the bases loaded and no outs, Lexington threw a wild pitch to the backstop and Lenyn Sosa came in to score and give the Intimidators the 3-2 win.
Kannapolis will continue their series with Lexington on Sunday afternoon at 5:00 p.m. Charlie Neuweiler (3-9, 4.78 ERA) will get the ball for the Legends while Taylor Varnell (7-3, 3.03 ERA) will be on the bump for the Intimidators.
