Greenville Drive News Release
GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Greenville Drive dropped the series opener to the Greensboro Grasshoppers on Saturday night, 7-2, at Fluor Field in a game that was delayed over an hour due to rain.
Greensboro got the scoring started early, scoring one in the first and two more in the second. An RBI double by Fabricio Macias scored one in the first, while a two-run home run by Jonah Davis plated the two in the second to give the Grasshoppers a 3-0 lead.
Drive starter Kevin Biondic settled in from there, retiring 13 of the next 15 batters he faced over the next four innings. Meanwhile, Greensboro starter Will Kobos held the Drive without a hit in his 4.0 innings of work, walking two and striking out four.
Greenville managed its first hits in the sixth with back-to-back singles from Jonathan Ortega and Grant Williams to start the frame but three straight flyouts stranded them.
Both teams would plate runs in the seventh. Justin Harrer singled to lead off the seventh and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Davis, making it 4-1 Greensboro. The Drive countered in the bottom half, as Kole Cottam drew a walk, moved to third on an error and scored on a wild pitch.
The Grasshoppers added three in the ninth inning. After back-to-back walks to start the frame, a two-RBI double by Harrer followed later by an RBI single by Davis, his fourth RBI of the night, pushed the lead to 7-1.
Greenville added one in the ninth, as Cole Brannen singled up the middle to score Devlin Granberg for the final score of 7-2.
Ortega led the way for the Drive, going 2-for-4, while Granberg and Cottam each singled and scored in the game. Oddanier Mosqueda threw 1.2 scoreless innings and did not allow a hit, striking out three without a walk.
The two teams continue the series on Sunday with first pitch at 3:05 PM. Drive righty Chase Shugart will take on Greensboro righty Noe Toribio.
