Augusta GreenJackets News Release
NORTH AUGUSTA, SOUTH CAROLINA: The Hickory Crawdads (66-41, 25-16) defeated the Augusta Pimento Cheese (60-50, 24-18) by a final of 10-7 on Saturday night. Hickory scored the final eight runs of the night to win the series opener at SRP Park.
The GreenJackets grabbed the first runs of the game in the 2nd inning. Jacob Gonzalez singled to reach base and lead the inning off. With two outs, Ricardo Genoves belted a double to score Gonzalez to give Augusta a 1-0 lead. Then it was Tyler Flores with a single to extend the Pimento Cheese lead to 2-0.
In the 5th inning, Hickory scored their first runs of the night. Matt Whatley's two-run home run tied the game at two, but the Pimento Cheese had an answer in the home-half. Diego Rincones smacked a sacrifice fly, and the Cheese had a 3-2 lead.
They'd come up in the 6th inning and deliver some more runs, all with two outs. The first scored on a RBI double for Flores. Then it was Edie with a triple to make it a 5-2 Augusta lead. Ismael Munguia extended his hitting streak to eight games with a single, as he'd drive in a run to make it 6-2. Then Rincones picked-up an infield hit, and the Jackets lead was 7-2.
But Hickory would not go quietly. The Crawdads added a run in the 7th inning on a Tyreque Reed single to make it just a 7-3 Augusta advantage. Hickory brought home four in the 8th, capped off by Jonathan Ornelas's two-RBI single, and we were all even at seven.
In the 10th inning, Hickory tacked on three more to take a 10-7 lead and they'd hang on for the win on Saturday night.
Player of the Game: Mikey Edie, 3-3, R, RBI, BB
Edie was a home run shy of the cycle, and continued to be a phenomenal at-bat for the GreenJackets lineup. Edie was the only GreenJacket to reach base against Hickory's Kelvin Gonzalez late in the game, and he did so twice.
Tomorrow's Game: 5:05 PM vs Hickory Crawdads (Texas Rangers), SRP Park, North Augusta, South Carolina
Pitching Matchup: (HIC) RHP Tyree Thompson (5-5, 3.01 ERA) vs (AUG) LHP Seth Corry (8-2, 1.85 ERA)
Seth Corry prepares for an early evening start on Sunday against the Hickory Crawdads. Corry's last outing was one of the best of his career. He pitched 5.2 innings of no-hit baseball against the Lexington Legends on July 30th, and he finished the night with 10 strikeouts, a career high. Corry has been on a tear in the 2nd half of the season. He holds a 1.85 ERA in 2019, but since the All-Star break, he owns an ERA of 0.84. He also has earned wins in his last seven starts. Corry is currently ranked as the #9 overall prospect in the San Francisco Giants organization. He was a 3rd round pick in 2017 from Lone Peak High School in Highland, Utah.
Tyree Thompson will take the baseball in the 2nd game of the series for the Hickory Crawdads. Thompson has been sensational this year. He has pitched at least five-innings in his last 10 starts and has never allowed more than three runs in any of his 13 starts in 2019. In his last start, he tossed six-innings on the road against the Asheville Tourists. He allowed just one-run, while earning the win. Thompson pitched for the Hickory Crawdads for all of 2018, and the right-hander went 7-11 with an ERA of 4.93. He was drafted by the Texas Rangers in 2016 out of Karr High School in New Orleans, LA.
