ROUND ROCK, Texas - Doug Deeds hit the game-winning two-run home run in the bottom of the 12th inning to push the Round Rock Express past the Nashville Sounds Saturday night at The Dell Diamond. The Express (48-34) hold a 3-0 advantage over the Sounds (37-45) in the four-game series.
With one out in the bottom of 12th inning, Matt Kata walked to bring up Deeds who was 1-for-5 on the night. Deeds delivered the game-winning home run on a 2-1 pitch off Donovan Hand. Hand (1-4) took the loss, pitching 1.1 innings allowing two runs on two hits while walking three and striking out two.
The Express tied the game 7-7 in the bottom of the ninth on Mike Napoli's three-run home run with two outs. It was Napoli's second home run of the game, also delivering a solo shot in the fifth inning.
The Express scored in the bottom of the first inning on Chad Tracy's two-run home run. It was Tracy's 17th home run on the year, two behind team-leader Chris Davis, who was off tonight.
Round Rock tacked one another run in the second on Deeds' first hit of the night, an RBI double that plated Joey Butler. The Sounds answered in the third with a run of their own on Caleb Gindl's solo home run.
Eric Farris tripled to lead off the fourth inning and later scored on Brett Carroll's single to bring the Sounds within one run. The Express scored on Napoli's home run to make the score 5-3.
The Sounds scored four runs in the sixth inning to push the score to 6-4. Erick Almonte, Taylor Green, Gindl and Wil Nieves all had hits in the inning.
The Sounds tacked on one more run in the eighth inning on Gindl's RBI-single. Daniel Herrera was charged with the blown save after lasting two-thirds of an inning and allowing three runs on two hits and a walk in the bottom of the ninth.
Mark Hamburger (3-3) got the win, pitching two scoreless innings without allowing a hit and one walk with three strikeouts.
Express Starter Eric Hurley lasted 5.1 innings and allowed six runs on seven hits and three walks with two strikeouts. Four of the seven hits he allowed were in the sixth inning.
Nashville Starter Amaury Rivas allowed four runs on seven hits and a walk with six strikeouts over 5.0 innings.
Round Rock and Nashville conclude their four-game series Sunday with a 7:05 p.m. CDT first pitch at The Dell Diamond. Right-hander Zach Jackson (6-2, 5.65 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Express, while right-hander Frankie De La Cruz (3-4, 3.80 ERA) is slated to go for the Sounds.
