Zephyrs lose to Cubs

Des Moines, Iowa - Ty Wright smacked a go ahead base hit in the eighth inning to give the Iowa Cubs a 4-3 lead. The hits continued in the eighth inning as Iowa sent 11 hitters to the plate and scored 6 runs. The Cubs defeated the Zephyrs 9-4 in front of 10,440 fans at Principal Park in Des Moines.

Iowa jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the game, scoring a run in the fourth inning and a pair of runs in the fifth. The Zephyrs offense managed two hits through 7 innings. Cubs starter Robert Coello pitched six shutout innings.

The Z's rallied with a run top of the eighth. Vinny Rottino and Josh Kroeger doubled, followed by a two run home run from Mike Cervenak.

The Z's and Cubs were tied at three in the eighth inning when the I-Cubs scored six runs, scattering five hits in the inning. All of the hits were singles. Blake Parker picked up the win despite a blown save. Iowa native Dan Jennings suffered the defeat for the Zephyrs allowing six runs in a inning and two thirds.

The Zephyrs scored a run in the ninth when Ozzie Martinez tripled. Iowa appealed that the runner missed second base. On the appeal Martinez stole home plate.

New Orleans starter Tom Koehler pitched six innings and allowed three runs on five hits.

Iowa has won 9 of its last ten games, Zephyrs have dropped seven of eight.
