Iowa Cubs News Release

Outfielder Marlon Byrd has been activated off of the 15-day disabled list by the Chicago Cubs today. In a corresponding roster move, OF Lou Montañez has been optioned back to Triple-A Iowa.

Byrd was placed on the DL by Chicago on May 22 after being hit by a pitch and suffering multiple facial fractures. In four games with Iowa, Byrd was 4-for-15 with a double, home run, three RBI, and one stolen base. He was also hit by a pitch twice in his rehab stint with the I-Cubs. Byrd is hitting .308 in 44 games with Chicago this season. He has eight doubles, three home runs, 11 RBI, and 23 runs scored. Byrd started in center field and was batting sixth in the Cubs lineup against the White Sox this afternoon.

Montañez is expected to rejoin Iowa on Tuesday when the team is in Oklahoma City. A first-round draft pick (third overall) by the Cubs in 2000, Montañez made his Chicago Cub debut when he was called up on May 24 vs. the New York Mets. He went 2-for-4 with an RBI-double in the game. In 25 total games with Chicago, Montañez hit .239 (11-for-46) with three doubles, one home run, and nine RBI. He is batting .369 with 11 doubles and five home runs with the I-Cubs. His 43 RBI through 42 games were second in the PCL at the time of his promotion.
