Express keep rolling on road
Published on November 28, 2011 under ECHL (ECHL) News Release
The start of a six-game road trip did nothing to slow down the Chicago Express last week as they went 3-0-1 to extend their unbeaten streak to five games. Chicago is 11-5-2 for 24 points, and has a three-point lead over Kalamazoo for first place in the North Division.
Chicago opened the week with a come-from-behind 3-2 win at Reading on Wednesday. The Express trailed 2-1 entering the final period, but Blair Riley tied the game midway through the period and Bobby Robins netted the game winner with 2:21 remaining to lift Chicago to the win. Chicago set a team record with 47 shots on goal in the victory.
Two nights later, four different Express players found the back of the net in a 4-2 win over the Royals. Chaz Johnson led the way with three points (1g-2a) while Tyler Donati (1g-1a), Tyler Johnson (1g-1a) and Kyle Ostrow (0g-2a) each chipped in with two points. Paul Dainton turned aside 29 Reading shots to earn the win in net.
The Express earned a point in a 3-2 overtime loss at Trenton on Saturday. Trailing 2-0 midway through the third period, Chicago got goals from Evan Stephens and Chaz Johnson a little over two minutes apart to send the game to an extra session. Rob Nolan kept the Express in the game, making 37 saves on a night where Trenton had a 40-22 edge in shots on goal.
In the final game of the weekend on Sunday in Trenton, the Express managed just 11 shots on goal, but still came away with a 4-3 win. Robins scored a pair of goals, including the eventual game winner 59 seconds into the third period while Darcy Campbell added a pair of assists.
The Express boast a balanced offense with six players in double digits in points with Riley, who is currently loaned to Bridgeport of the AHL, leading the way with 16 points (7g-9a). His seven goals are tied with Chaz Johnson for the team lead. Campbell's 12 assists are tops among all ECHL defensemen while his 14 points are third among league blue liners.
The Express, who lead the ECHL with a 6-2-1 record on the road, continue their road trip this week with games at Toledo on Wednesday and Saturday. Chicago's only regulation losses on the road this season have come against Kalamazoo.
