Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - Jai Miller's two-out, three-run homer erased a 2-1 Round Rock lead in the top of the fourth and proved to be the difference-maker as the Omaha Royals defeated the Express 6-3 in the series finale Monday at The Dell Diamond. The Royals (38-31) won the series 3-1 and lead the season series 8-4; Omaha has won seven of the last nine meetings. The Express (31-41) suffered their first home series loss since dropping three of four against New Orleans in their first home series of the season April 16-19.
A costly error started the fourth as Round Rock center fielder Yordany Ramirez dropped a fly ball from Alex Gordon in left-center. Kila Ka`aihue followed with a single, pushing Gordon to third. The Express had a chance to get out of the inning as first baseman Matt Kata caught Gordon between third and home on a grounder, and Ed Lucas flied out to right. However, Miller followed with his second home run of the series.
Scott Thorman delivered a two-out solo homer in the sixth, pushing Omaha's lead to 5-2. Round Rock got a run back in the bottom of the sixth as Kata had a leadoff double, and Oswaldo Navarro followed with an RBI single. But that was as close as the Express would get. Miller led off the top of the seventh with a single and later scored on Edwin Bellorin's one-out RBI single that capped the scoring.
Starter Luis Mendoza (5-5) picked up the win for the Royals. He allowed three runs on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts over 6.0 innings. Greg Holland tossed 3.0 scoreless, no-hit innings with two strikeouts for his third save of the season.
Express starter Polin Trinidad (3-5) suffered the loss. He surrendered six runs, three of which were earned, on seven hits and no walks with four strikeouts over 7.0 innings. Jonah Bayliss and Yorman Bazardo each worked a scoreless inning in relief.
Ed Lucas gave Omaha the game's first lead with a two-out solo homer in the top of the second. The Express quickly answered with a run on two hits in the bottom of the inning. Kata walked to lead off the frame and later scored on a Ramirez two-out RBI single. Kata gave the Express their lone lead of the game in the third. Drew Meyer walked with one out, and Brian Bogusevic followed with a single that pushed Meyer to third. Meyer then scored on Kata's RBI groundout.
Navarro had Round Rock's lone multiple-hit game, going 2-for-4. Kata scored twice. Lucas and Miller both were 2-for-4 for the Royals; Miller scored twice and had three RBI.
Round Rock returns to action Tuesday, opening a four-game series against Albuquerque. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. CDT. Right-hander Bud Norris (0-0, 5.19 ERA) will make his third rehab start for the Express. Right-hander Claudio Vargas (0-0, 3.00 ERA) is slated to start for the Isotopes.
