Round Rock Express News Release

ROUND ROCK - The Triple-A Round Rock Express received a bullpen boost Thursday, adding Major League veteran Jorge Sosa.

Sosa signed a Minor League contract with the Houston Astros, who assigned him to Round Rock. He will join the team tonight in New Orleans.

Sosa, 31, struck out 12 batters and allowed 17 runs over 20 relief appearances for the New York Mets before being designated for assignment on May 13. Released on May 21, his four victories still remain tied for the most by a reliever in the National League.

The 6-foot-2 180-pound right-hander first signed with the Colorado Rockies as an undrafted amateur free agent shortly after his 17th birthday in 1995. He was later plucked from the draft pool by the Seattle Mariners before landing with the Milwaukee Brewers care of the Rule V Draft in 2001.

Before appearing in an official game with the Brewers, Sosa was claimed off of waivers by Tampa Bay, where he made his Major League debut in 2002. He posted a 2-7 record with a 5.53 ERA over 31 appearances (14 starts).

He went on to appear in 254 games with the Devil Rays, the Atlanta Braves, the St. Louis Cardinals and New York, where he began the 2007 season with a 6-1 record.

Sosa brings with him a 40-49 record and a 4.67 ERA at the Major League level and a 9-4 record with a 2.36 ERA at the Minor League level.
