Everblades Tie Series with Game Two Win
April 16, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release
ESTERO, FL- They only played three times during the regular season, but the dislike between the Wheeling Nailers and Florida Everblades is beginning to heat up in their Eastern Conference Quarterfinal Series. The set will make its way to WesBanco Arena with a 1-1 deadlock. After a scoreless first period, the Everblades opened up a 3-0 advantage in the middle frame, and never looked back, winning 4-1 at Germain Arena. Anton Zlobin had the lone tally for the Nailers, which came on the power play.
The first period was a tale of two parts, as the Everblades had the electric start, but the Nailers finished well. Florida took the first seven shots of the contest, which all came prior to the first media timeout. After that short stoppage, Wheeling responded with 11 of the final 17 attempts. However, none of the shots converted on either side.
The scoring finally began at the 3:58 mark of the middle frame, when the Everblades connected on a power play. Franky Palazzese robbed Danny New's left circle shot, but a rebound went off of the right post and sat in the crease, where it was tapped home by Ryan Martindale. Shortly after that, Florida killed a Wheeling power play, then scored moments later. Ethan Werek entered on the left side of the offensive zone, dropping a pass to trailer Matt Willows, who deposited a shot along the ice and into the cage. Jon DiSalvatore put the hosts up by three, when he smacked in a puck out of a scramble in front of the goal. With 4:40 remaining in the stanza, the Nailers closed the gap to two with a power play tally. Brett Stern took a wrist shot from the blueline, which was redirected in by Anton Zlobin.
The Everblades added an insurance goal late in the third period for a 4-1 final score, when Matt Marquardt drilled in a one-timer from the right circle off of a pass by Martindale.
Anthony Peters rebounded from an ugly outing on Friday to get the win for Florida, making 20 saves on 21 shots. Franky Palazzese suffered the defeat, despite stopping 35 of the 39 shots he faced for Wheeling.
The Nailers and Everblades will head to Wheeling for games three, four, and five at WesBanco Arena on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. Wednesday's tilt begins at 7:05, while Friday and Saturday will see the puck hit the ice at 7:35.
