THE MATCHUP
The #2 South Carolina Stingrays continue the 2016 Kelly Cup Playoffs with a best-of-seven Eastern Conference Quarterfinals series with the #7 Kalamazoo Wings. South Carolina leads the series, 1-0, after a 4-1 win last night in Game 1. The Stingrays are the all-time ECHL leader in playoff victories and are tied for the most Kelly Cup Championships with three. This is the second time the Stingrays and Wings have met in the postseason with the first meeting coming in the Conference Semifinals in 2012. The Wings took that series, 4-1.
LAST NIGHT'S WIN
The Stingrays opened the 2016 Kelly Cup Playoffs with a victory in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals. The Stingrays were led by five different multi-point scorers and got 22 saves from netminder Mark Dekanich in the victory. Derek DeBlois, Austin Fyten, Caleb Herbert and Kelly Zajac each had a goal and assist and in the win, and David Pacan notched two assists. The Stingrays scored four unanswered goals, and outshot the Wings 40-23.
ROAD TEAMS ARE ROLLING
The Stingrays are not the only road team to enjoy success thus far in the 2016 Kelly Cup Playoffs. Including the Stingrays win last night, road teams are 8-0 in the playoffs this postseason.
BACK TO KALAMAZOO
South Carolina forward David Pacan enjoyed a breakout season with the Stingrays this year. The forward led the club with 62 points (20 goals, 42 assists), career highs in goals and points. Pacan spent one year in Kalamazoo, scoring 45 points (13 goals, 23 assists) during the 2013-14 season.
HITTING THE CENTURY CLUB
Last night's victory was the 100th all-time postseason win for the South Carolina Stingrays. The club is the first ECHL team to accomplish this feat.
KELLY CUP EXPERIENCE
The Stingrays enter the playoffs with plenty of postseason experience. Six players of the Stingrays' roster were part of the team's run to the Kelly Cup Finals last season, including Derek DeBlois who finished third on the team with 29 points, and Joe Devin, who scored 13 goals in the playoffs. The club also has Bobby Shea on the roster who won a Kelly Cup in 2013 with the Reading Royals.
